Yep

The Cubs are close to acquiring outfielder Dexter Fowler from the Astros, Bruce Levine of 670thescore.com tweets. The Astros will receive big-league players in return, Ken Rosenthal of FOX Sports tweets, and one of those is pitcher Dan Straily, Susan Slusser of the San Francisco Chronicle notes (on Twitter).

Strailey had huge K numbers in MiLB but it never really translated to the bigs. Still a good.l backend guy w upside

You save $ by dumping fowler and his contract is up after this season. You guys weren't bringing him back anyway. He's a good fit for the Cubs

Hmm. Trying to remove my fandom for Luis. But feels like a bit of an overpay. Could not care less about straily. Will miss Luis versatility. Even if his abs were going to get more and more infrequent.

From Roto:

Straily struggled in 2014 as an occasional spot-starter for the Cubs, pitching to a bloated 6.75 ERA over 52 innings. When he had a chance to pitch legitimate innings for the A's in 2013, he put up a 3.96 ERA in 152+ innings to go with a 124/55 K/BB ratio. It's not unreasonable to expect similar numbers with the Astros, as their rotation is incredibly thin and they should give the 26-year-old every chance to stick as a starter. Jan 19 - 11:09 AM

Straily owned us when he was with Oakland. Glad to see him on the good side.

But damnit I wanted to hang on to Dex until the deadline

I like this trade. Dex's OBP will be missed but he's injury prone and his defense is abysmal. Definitely not worth $10+ million after this year.

Also gets Matty D out of the lineup.

OF will have 2 ++ defenders and Gattis.

Lineup is shaping up pretty nice. I still wish we'd make a splash for a FA SP like Sheilds.

With Scherzer going to Washington, they now have too many SP...

Depending on what article you read... Nats may want to move Strasburg, Zimmerman, or Desmond.

Washington has a very solid team -- but are always looking to add to their farm system. Look for an Astros/Nats trade to bring in one of their guys.

ETA: with not spending $9 - 10 million on Fowler, the Astros now have some money to spend on SP.

Appel, and D. Fisher for Strasburg? What would it take... what would you be willing to give?

The team still needs SP help.

I like Straily, but at the same time, if any of our top 3 (feldman, Keuch, Jabroni) regress in any way, we will be hurting.

Personally, I don't think Jabroni can match his production from last season. This team needs another top 3 starter.

And now we have a little less of a logjam in the outfield. With Grossman, Hoes, Presley fighting for a roster spot and Domingo and Tucker pushing to break through to the big club, it's gonna be interesting to see who sticks

Not exciting but he would probably be super cheap and eat innings

Rotation of Keuchel, Feldman, Jabroni, Vogelsong and Straily with Peacock or Oberholtzer as a swing man isn't going to wow anyone but it will be serviceable

From Crawfish Boxes on the payroll post Fowler deal

quote:

Last season's payroll was at $50,485,800. Assuming the Astros really had $20 million over that 2014 payroll to spend, they could go another $8 million in free agency or trade to fix this roster. Could that mean they make a run at James Shields? Could they save that and make an impact trade at the deadline? The market is dwindling right now, but one report over the weekend suggested that one reason teams haven't broken the bank for guys like James Shields is that their budgets are maxed out.

Don't trade anyone else this year. Unless they can ship Castro and dominguez and Santana to Philly for Hamels.

Otherwise, the SP in next year's FA class is pretty deep. I think Houston lands a big time arm next offseason

This is the key to maintaining a strong bullpen. We need the pitchers to go deeper into games with more regularity.

I don't think the rotation is going to be all competing for the Cy Young next season... but I think it'll be strong enough to keep games reasonably close.

I know this is crazy, but I still have hope that Peacock turns it around and becomes consistent. It's so frustrating how he can be so dominant and then just go full Chris Holt.

Bold prediction:

Bret Oberholtzer has the 2nd best season of any pitcher on the staff.

Guy could have had 10 wins minimum if it weren't for a terrible string of games where he had little to no run support. I'd like to see an average of how many runs per game that supported him last year.

Run support of Games Started for Obie:
Avg: 3.2 per start
0 Runs: 3 Starts
1 Run: 4 Starts
2 Runs: 4 Starts
3 Runs: 5 Starts
4 Runs: 3 Starts
5 Runs: 0 starts
6 Runs: 1 Starts (loss to rangers 6 - 13)
7 Runs: 2 Starts (win to A's and win to NYY)
8 Runs: 1 Starts (win)
9 Runs: 1 Starts (win, Springer 5 RBI game)

Prom - did you read the article about Singleton's Offseason?
quote:

"I've just been hanging out and decompressing from baseball, and sports in general," Singleton said ... "I'm trying to get better as a person and strengthen my game. My biggest thing this offseason is strengthening my mental game, as far as dealing with failure and preparation and stuff like that."

Does that sound like he's focused on Baseball at all? I really hope he hasn't been sitting around all off season getting stoned and eating cold pizza. I'm really glad the Astros aren't relying on him because it really doesn't sound like he has his head in the game at all.

TODAY, 8:42am: Vogelsong and the Astros are nearing a deal but are still addressing the final details of the arrangement, according to ESPN.com’s Jerry Crasnick.

Vogelsong has been in Houston these last couple of days, per reports. I wouldn't be surprised if the signing is announced sometime today.

Edit: And I am extremely worried about Singleton.
