Boras and Drew would have to come down on their demands. I think he is going to have to accept a 1 year 10-13 million dollar deal.
Detroit is an obvious team with a hole at short, the Mets don't make sense to me as they're not close to contending, Yankees make sense but he would have to play 2B, and of course the Red Sox who have no idea how the rookie will hit.

He could be in play for Texas as well though, the rumor he had a 3 year 39 million dollar deal I think was bogus or he would have taken it with Spring Training having started.

Well there are a few teams...Tigers, Yankees, Rangers have all been said to be scouting him.

Really though, these teams won't be using him as an every day player. He fits a nice role as a super sub with superb, GG defense. His original position was SS, and has played there a few games during ST, partly because Castro was hurt, and partly as a showcase to other teams. Otherwise, Baez would've been getting all those starts, I would think.

The problem is his salary, which is why no other teams have been said to be scouting him.

I doubt that...he's only getting 2.3 million which i doubt is in the top 25 for 2b and certianly less than we're paying bonifacio who i think only got a major league offer from the cubs.

And if you slot him in at short that figure is even less of a problem.

I'm sure someone will kick the perverbial tires, but i doubt there is legitimate interest enough to get him moved.

His problem is the mendoza line and being around it or below it.

well of course, becuase he's not good. Which is why trading him doens't make any sense becuase you'd be getting a bag of balls in return and he offers more value to the cubs being an everyday positional place holder. Which is why he's not geting traded.

Yankees could make a move if Cubs were willing to accept a low level prospect. He would probably take over 2B for us and improve the defense and offense which is kinda sad.

I haven't heard of legitmate interest from the yankees since last year. Not saying it's not there, but I have to imagine you guys know roughly where the cubs starting price will be and what you guys would be willing to give up, adn that teh two aren't close. Just speculating though.

I hope you take him...i'll take the bag of balls.

Don't get me wrong...his glove is fantastic, but our offense is so anemic as it is, having a guy batting .208 just compounds the problem.

Yeah I haven't read much on Yankees interest since the signing of Roberts. Maybe a Darwin for Ichiro swap

I would say deal but after hee-sop choi and koske fukudome i'd prefer if we got our international talent from the south.

He's 21st. Bonafacio is next at 20th, only 200K more than Barney. I'd rather Bonafacio or Valbuena play 2nd though.

He'd actually be one spot higher @ 20th.

I'd say Detroit, considering Iglesias has 2 broken legs.

I'd say Yankees as well, considering B. Roberts is your everyday starter. He hasn't even sniffed 100 games played since 2009...

I agree. I was just saying who was interested. I do think he adds value to a team that needs depth however, and we as fans should fully anticipate getting less than a bag of balls for him if traded, because that means it's just the next stepping stone for one the kids to get their playing time is all.

I definitely think a debate on Barney being traded or not is completely unnecessary though, especially since the consensus is that Wendell Kim probably has more presence in the batter's box than Barney.

FWIW, Cubs Den is a great site for Cubs fans. It's ran by John Arguello, who is basically all things Cubs. Great source of information.

I think they're closer than people think, but Stephen Drew ain't gonna put them over the hump.

They have a lot of holes still, 1B, 2B, SS, the OF and their C is a young kid. The strength is the pitching staff right now and Wright.

That's not even close to true.

Hyperbole runs rampant around these parts. 5 straight years of sub 4 ERA followed by a 4.03 ERA isn't in the same galaxy as the worst SP in the majors.

frick Mike Olt. I'll be watching Bryant closely though. I was sold on him and wanted the Astros to take him over Appel last year. His power plus the Crawford boxes

Thanks for the rec. I like Bleacher Nation. They do a lot of content on prospects, too. And they are fairly realistic in their expectations.

I'm really happy about Olt making the team. I hope the Cubs stick with him if he slumps, too. I'd really like to see Darwin Barney go to the bench in favor of Valbuena and then eventually Baez.

Did i miss it or did luke do not do a top 40 this year, and only do the positional review?

Cubs fans realistic...unpossible.

I'm sure you read it since i got it from BN but quote form olt about making the team:
quote:

Theo and Jed have a plan going for the Cubs. Just listening to it, you get goosebumps with what they’re trying to do. To be a part of that is definitely something special

I have so many excites. Not really for this season, but for the very near future and long term strength of the farm system.

No kidding.

Last year before the season i was, baselessly, confident baez would be traded for pitching, but then he had his meteoric rise and put on a display that's basically untouchable. So i'm still wondering where our front end pitching is going to come from. With the news that scherzer (sp) turned down the extension i'm really hoping he makes it to free agency, because i don't think we're far from a lot of these guys not only knocking on the door but making an impact...but we have to get some front end pitching talent.

It's going to have to come in free agency, I'd imagine.
