Are these the gold standard 4 of American professional sports?

When they're doing well the whole league thrives.

Well the NBA has been on fire while the Lakers sucked so I disagree there.

I don't believe the Cowboys or Yankees need to be good for the NFL and MLB to be good, but it helps when they're at one extreme or another. Going .500 doesn't really get the homers or the haters too excited.

Cowboys have won 3 playoff games in 21 years.. Has the NFL been thriving the last two decades?

Yes the team that has won 2 playoff games in the last two decades is definitely 100% the gold standard if the NFL

You could make the case that the NFL became infinitely more popular once the oligopoly of a select few NFL teams winning the Super Bowl every year (49ers, Cowboys, Giants, Redskins) started dying out.

I don't follow NHL, but the Maple Leafs have made the playoffs once in the last 12 years. NHL seems to be doing alright considering they have increased total revenue every year since 2005.

The Cowboys are a laughing stock, and will likely continue to be when Dak gets hurt in the playoffs this year and Romo comes in and fricks it up again. Pretty sure the NFL wipes their arse with $1,000 bills.

No one even watches the MLB outside of the cities where major teams play, yet they are making arse loads of money off those local tv deals.

and the Lakers haven't been remotely good in 5 years and the NBA is better than its ever been.

So to answer your question, you're a doofus.

The NBA needs stars. Baseball needs the Yankees or Red Sox but that's about it. The NFL needs nothing.

Shouldn't a gold standard have at least competed for a championship in the last half century?

Cowboys: 3 playoff wins in last 2 decades
Lakers: Haven't had a winning record in 4 years
Maple Leafs: 1 playoff appearance in the last 13 years

The NBA is as great as it can be right now despite the Lakers sucking arse. Lots of great stars and the playoffs are a great product

If we're talking gold standard in hockey, Canadiens > Maple Leafs

Though I guess the Québécois thing can alienate some outsiders. Still, there are lots of Montreal fans that can't speak French.

The Canadiens should be in that group before the Leafs.

And no, leagues don't need any of them to prosper.

The NBA is unwatchable these days and the NFL is heading that way with all the rules changes and political correctness.

All I know is that Alabama is the gold standard of college football and the sport is better when they are dominating much like they have 2008- present day. Sure I'll get a lot of down votes but facts are facts.
