Are you going to put sensors on players cleats to see if they foul it off their foot? What will be used to determine if a player swung? I don't understand
Huh?
Video could easily tell you if it's fouled off or not.

So you are going to video replay every single play?
Nobody is talking about using "video" for the strike zone, they're talking about using pitchFX which is already installed at every park

How is that any different than automated strike zone? Video playbacks come instantaneously.

If it's a rigid strike zone installed on Pitch FX you would just have to automatically relay the ball/strike call to the scorer/scoreboard which could be instantaneous. You don't have someone watching a tv screen on it. The tech isn't really there for everything else
I'm not sure if you're trolling or don't understand

Let's start with the ball/strike box and go from there. We put a man on the moon in 1969. In 2016, I'm sure we can figure out how to determine if a ball was foul or not or a bat went around. Tennis seems to do a pretty good job of it with their replays. And they do it very quickly.

And with video coming back instantaneously, why can't the relayer of the ball/strike call also relay a foul ball?
Just seems odd to want the human element removed from the zone but not for all of the other calls.

How do you remove the human element for a ball fouled off a player's foot? Or judging a check swing? That was my original question that you answered with "video"

Why can't video decipher that?

This takes a minute to decide.
The pitch FX is instantaneous. There a massive difference.
There's no video involved regarding the balls and strikes.

Right. It's instant and automatic and faster than a human umpire.
There's still be an ump back there to determine check swings, plays at the plate, foul balls etc. just won't be doing pitches.

It's also not as douchy as Joe West... yet

They could add sweet arse ringtones for strike and ball on the TV broadcast too
Nah. It has to be like old school Bugs Bunny/Road Runner sound effects

I would be done with baseball if this happened

Why can't the computerized box be used to determine balls and strikes and take the subjective factor out of it?
This would be the single most important thing baseball could do to improve the quality and integrity of their product.
Right now we have hugely inconsistent zones from umpire to umpire, from pitcher to pitcher, from hitter to hitter, and varying depending on the count. This is subjectivity in opposition to the integrity of the game. It probably delays games significantly because it lengthens counts (a fourth ball or third strike are less likely when the count is not already full) and encourages vindictive behaviors from umpires and bitching from players and managers.
Use the home plate umpire as a supplement to the computerized box - he's there as a backup and primarily for other tasks.

They already have video for anything that truly matters. If you check swing on a 2 strike count and get called out then I feel no sympathy for you. Video exists for run scoring plays, add for foul balls if you need it and hit by pitches for situations where the naked eye can't see it. Install a computer to call balls and strikes. Take fat Joe West away from my tv. No other sport is ok with the wrong call being made over and over and over and over especially in an aspect so fundamental to the game.

I've already seen at least two missed calls tonight by the ump. Why wouldn't anyone not want those calls to be correct?
Posted on 11/2/16 at 8:55 pm to buffbraz
I remember reading umps make $300k+ is that true? LOL that seems easily replaced by some cameras and a little software

Ump getting grilled for missing that strike 3 call....well at least they made the game interesting

This ump may have singlehandedly warmed me to the idea of automated balls & strikes
