Why can't the computerized box be used to determine balls and strikes and take the subjective factor out of it?

They could add sweet arse ringtones for strike and ball on the TV broadcast too

I vote iPhone text tone for strike, Blackberry text tone for ball. What about you, buffbraz?

Not remotely funny and doesn't answer the question.

They should Taylor those to match that particular umpires zone IMO. Definitely not hard to do

I saw a story that this was actually being tested. Box tells ump if it was a ball or strike, played a few games with it and no complaints so it is probably not that far off

I think it would be a good idea, but tough to implement. I envision in the future the home plate umpire using some sort of glasses with an augmented reality strike zone box so that they can make the calls and keep the person there for calls at the plate etc (runners)

my thing is if you do a computerized box, you have to have a display of it for everyone to see.

It seems like like an easy enough transition. I'm all about taking subjective factors out of umping/refereeing.

Of course. Everyone should be able to see if the pitch was a strike or not.......baseball took forever to implement replay, but this will happen eventually.

The end goal is not having a 78 year old ump that can barely see making ball/strike calls

We have the technology to instantly call the game for us already but we let bad calls run rampant because? Because why?

It's not tough to implement at all.

I guess the real answer if ump unions and taking power away from them.

yes. yes please.

they would end up changing the strike zone.

you never see the high hard one called a strike anymore.

umps now call balls 2" completely below the knees a strike and balls 5 inches above the belt a ball.

anyway, you start the clarion call. twitter, FB whatever it takes. let us know. I will sign the petition.

There was a real sports segment on it. Analytics over 3 years of every pitch. The findings were staggering. Not only number of missed calls but the propensity for home teams to have fewer bad calls against them vs visiting teams. Go watch the segment, its pretty eye opening.

Pitch f/X is used extensively already for Stat purposes, and has been making umpires look like idiots for years.

I'm done with Joe West and Angel Hernandez completely fricking up behind the plate and support our robot overlords to call balls and strikes.

What the frick would be the point of a HP umpire if there is a computerized zone?

Because then you don't get to watch pissed off Minor League managers use rosin bags as impromptu hand grenades.

Baseball is imperfectly perfect and you're just going to have to deal with it.
