Will there be a "modern" revolution among defensive strategy that will put an end to these 40 point+ contests between top teams?

Seems like there is no answer to the hermans, meyers, kiffins of the world.

Whatever rules Saban is always arguing should be changed would have to be changed.

Not unless they change the rules to allow more contact on receivers.

How would that be fair at all? There is no illegal contact in college.

There has always been a handful of coaches whose offenses were next to unstoppable. This op overstates it.

Maybe the Leonard Fournette's, Jalen Hurd's of the world will start wanting to play LB instead of RB. Defenses need the athletes to win those one on one matchups in space.

A simple answer would be just run the clock after first downs like the nfl. Defenses are simply on the field too long over the entire period of the game.

There is 120ish D1 teams, so the talent is depleted. Coaches literally thought it was impossible to when with O back in the day. It wasn't until Spurrior, Meyer, etc that the good ole boy network was forced to change.

The defense can't breath of offensive receivers.
While receivers get away with murder.

The defense can't lay the wood anymore.
Offensive players used to have some fear within.

The defense has even more stacked against them now.
The days of good defense are but gone.

Unfortunately, CFB wants high scoring games.

Wonder if we have seen this happen with WR's and DB's. More teams are willing to play with 3/4/5 WR's out there, so guys that might have been DB's in the past are on offense.

Change illegal contact rules, don't stop the clock, dis allow pick plays and blocking downfield, the scoring will drop dramatically. Physicality would beat these spread teams but modern defensive rules won't allow it

The death knell in all of football began after the 1970s... technically.

When trying to catch a football was Russian roulette.

But the real end game was not only the can't touch the reveiver after 5 yards but any hit that could damage.

We all understand the impetus to make the game safer but taking away fear from a violent game has opened up pitch and catch. Nobody is scared. Nobody can be touched. That's a recipe for offensive dominance.

Running the clock would lower the scoring but really wouldn't address the issue. The defenses still have a hard time covering; it would just be a short game.

Seriously! LSU has given up 40 points maybe twice this decade.

ETA: and scored 40 maybe 10 times this decade
