Cardale Jones' place is sports history

This may have been discussed, but I can't think of a similar situation in major American sports quite like Jones. In part, it's because of the uniqueness of college football. A third string QB, the most important position on the field, but certainly no the only position. He played 3 games, 3/15 games, the final 20% of a season where "every game counts" each in prime time "do or die" scenarios against top competition. The Wisconsin game in particular, it was assumed OSU needed to win and win big.
Jeff Hostetler in 1990 started 2 regular season games and 3 playoff games en route to winning the Super Bowl for Giants as a backup and went 5-0. He played 26% of the season but was also second string (not third) and was a veteran NFL player.
There are pitchers most years in MLB (Brandon Finnegan for example) who come out of nowhere and dominate the post season, but I think what Jones did is unprecedented in the sense of where he came from, what needed to be done, and his significance to the team.
Maybe there are goalies in hockey, bench players in the NCAA tourney. What compares?

Up there with Brook Berringer as far as college football goes.
I remember UCLA had a backup PG that filled in for Tyus Edney and helped lead them to the National Championship game over Arkansas in '95.

Should have gone pro.

I was reminded the other day by a tweet that Matt Cassel didn't start a game in college

This situation was clearly unique.

This is still pretty insane.

Why should he have gone pro when he feels like he isn't ready for that level yet? He clearly stated that he felt like he wasn't ready for the NFL. He's only setting himself up for failure if he doesn't have confidence right now to succeed at the next left. Based on what he said, he made the right decision for himself.

Because he would have (a) gone in the 2nd or 3rd round, (b) made a lot of money, and (c) learned the QB position from NFL coaches.

From the reports I've read he was at best a 3rd day selection which would've had him in rounds 5-7. I've never seen a report that pegged him as high as a 2nd round pick.

I just listened to Daniel Jeremiah's podcast, where he said he might have gone as high as early second.
As for never seeing a report having him in the 2nd or 3rd, one of the most popular (not saying best) draft scouts - Mel Kiper - had him in the 2nd or 3rd. Those reports are out there, and they are not few and far between.
When 2nd or 3rd round money is available to you, and you're not expected to come in and start right away, I think entering the draft is the right move. There is no telling what will happen next year.

Eff Cameron Dollar and eff Nolan for not pressing the hell out of him. But Dollar had played a majority of the Semi game vs oSu as that is when Edney originally hurt his thumb. Also Toby Bailey had the game of his life and then regressed for his entire college playing days.

I just don't know. Ohio st was clearly loaded all around and the hottest team going. (Besides TCU) They whip whisky regardless. Their defense and rushing won those games. He was barely 50% vs Bama with 1 td 1 int. bamas D got lit up last bowl game by a crappy qb too. Their D had a poor secondary too. Props to his 3 wins but those were team wins.

I would say a very good comparable in hockey would be Ken Dryden.
Played 6 games in the NHL regular season before taking over for the Montreal Canadiens and winning the Stanley Cup and Conn Smythe.
He won the Calder (for best Rookie) the year after winning the Stanley Cup.

That is why the Habs fans loved Roy as a rook, he basically did the same thing, came up late and took them to a Cup. They beat Calgary that year.

Defense definitely played a monster role in that run.
Don't forget what Cardale did running though too. He had every answer on 3rd down too. I still can't process the entirety of what I just saw.
