The parents knowing their kids were going to school for free is fine if the assistance is being paid, but as you said, if they knew that the bills weren't being covered is another thing entirely.

My guess is they had zero idea as the books were being cooked. As another poster said, "The right hand was ignoring the left". They probably had no idea. No one did until the University did an audit. Then they saw the discrepancy. Kind of like me keeping track of my money in my safe. I have kids who sometimes go and pocket a little. I check it and redo the numbers twice a year. Every so often I see some $$$ are missing. I then have to go into inspector mode and find out how or why money is missing as my numbers don't add up.

I catch them too and changed the code. In this case they changed coaches and likely will get some of that money back.

Similar thing happened with Shaw and fraudulent "need based" tuition waivers but the embezzling money in this case takes it to a whole new level

Haha, I remember that. Hank Tierney down there at Shaw.

A whole nutha level entirely. I was told it was bad. A level below Sandusky.

Catholic schools now have a priest in the owner parish that is the arbiter of the need based tuition program. Shaw had the AD and Tierney giving out the slots to athletes. The Shaw case changed the game for all of the diocese schools across the state

So what happened at Southern Lab was similar then. This foundation that was meant to reach out and help with enrollment numbers helped with football numbers ..

The donors who donate their money to the school/university to dole out to potential students in need had their money siphoned off when it came to the student-athletes. These guys are geniuses.

Now, maybe the foundation had it's own funds generated through whatever means to help pay for the kids they enticed/recruited to come to the Lab school. That in itself is a violation as you can't recruit kids for athletic purposes regardless of where they reside, and to pay for their tuition? But then steal it? WTF?

Yea, whole nother level.

From NOLA.com..

One local athletic trainer with knowledge of the internal situation said, "Southern Lab is done. This is a SMU-like penalty. ... Randall gone and likely won't be able to coach (in Louisiana) again."

Great news for every other team in Division IV. It was an absolute joke to watch Lab competing in D IV the last two years.

When you are a "Class A" school and have your scrimmage against Evangel and a pre-district schedule that includes Riverside, U-High, Scotlandville and Parkview Baptist it is time to move up.

Can't say I feel too bad for them.

Watching them lineup against 1A schools was like watching men against boys.

Glad to see Division IV will actually be exciting this year and not everyone playing for second.

I kid you not, they had a fan on the other board say "this is just a good run of talent. We're not like Curtis or Evangel"

like the 10 years that JC and ECA were forced to play down in 2a... and 4 in briefly in 1a for eca...

There is a difference between JC, ECA and Lab. Curtis and Evangel wanted to play up but the idiot principals forced them to play down. They both played up the second they were allowed to.

Southern Lab could play up if they wanted but decided to use an absolutely stacked hand-picked team and compete at the lowest (and arguably weakest) level in order to stockpile state titles without actually having to work for it.

They essentially fielded a Divison II team and played in Divison IV. It was an absolute joke watching them lineup against the other teams in that class.

I frequent that board as well. Got a good chuckle out of that. It was quite obvious that this was more than a "good run of talent".

I thought it was just always assumed that SL, Evangel, and John Curtis recruited and gave perks to get athletes to go there?

Curtis and ECA played lower classes from 2005 to 2014.

it was 10 seasons and it's why we have the split now

at not point during that time did anyone other than JC or ECA win state in the class they were in

I thought it was less. But you are definitely correct, didn't realize it was that long.

I still believe the difference between the two is that JC and ECA wanted to play up and would have if they could, Lab could have moved up and decided to take the easiest path with a team that was light years better than anyone in D IV.

schools will have two "books" on need based assistance. One they show the LHSAA displaying a balanced approach, and one kept in the principal's drawer with the real numbers. It certainly happened at my school.

As long as each party does their job, no one finds out.

SL got caught bc the agents got greedy.

How is the need based assistance supposed to work to be legit? Some goes to athletes and some not?

Southern Lab and Grambling were powerhouse basketball programs up until the early 2000's. How they never got busted for anything is beyond me.

I don't see how Lafayette Christian hasn't gotten busted yet. But maybe they will in the future.

Here's how it went for us

1. School had an official auditor accept needbased applications for the entire student population

2. auditor makes recs which we follow

3. Parent/Coach/principal meet to discuss results. They agree to a tuition/payment level which is documented in the alternative (non-LHSAA) books. While this also happened for some non-athletes (honors kids), the overwhelming majority (90+%) of kids receiving principal discounts were athletes.

Another system

Parish priest approaches wealthy parishioner/booster or local business. Asks them to "sponsor" an athlete. That third party pays the tuition "indirectly" to the school via a money order or cash.

The "indirectly" part will either be via anonymous US Mail or an online payment with prepaid debit card.

I believe we should allow select schools to scholarship/sponsor/recruit athletes. Simply split the championships for all sports so that the nonselect schools are not at a disadvantage.

Today's generation of kid/parent will absolutely attend a select school over a comparable nonselect school simply for the "prestige" of being a scholarshipped athlete. I saw it all the time
