Can we finally admit that Mike D'Antoni is a good coach?

He got screwed in New York by Carmelo because of the Jeremy Lin situation but besides that he's always had a record of success.

I also won't hold his lakers stint against him.

I like dantoni and his system. He simply requires an elite point guard to run it.

D'Antoni is the Don Coryell of the NBA. He's a brilliant offensive mind whose innovations changed the NBA. However, his teams have never played defense and his postseason record leaves a lot to be desired.

Which generally isn't enough to get it done in the playoffs.

The last time a team won the NBA title and wasn't in the top 10 that season in defensive efficiency rating was the 05-06 heat who were ranked 17th that season and they beat the Mavericks who were at 12, so it was probably easier to overcome the bad defense against a similarly defensively challenged team.

That being said he is a good coach and his philosophy generates wins.

He also needs buy-in from his players, and Kobe & Melo weren't ever going to run his system like he wants it. I actually think both guys could have done it, considering their supreme talent, but it would have required a drastic change in how they played, and neither was willing.

Harden said "frick yea, lets do it!" when D'Antoni pitched him. He's also alot younger and less entrenched in his ways than the other 2 were when they were with D'Antoni.

I have always thought D'Antoni was a good coach that really can make an offense thrive with players that buy in.

His playoff record leaves something to be desired but you have to remember when he had Phoenix he was coaching small ball before small ball was a thing across the NBA.

The Suns had issues in the playoffs because the games became more physical and the west had a lot of dominate big men.

Now the NBA plays D'Antoni type of game and I do not think he will have the same issue in the playoffs now. Plus Harden gives him way more options than Nash did.

So wait, we're allowed to disagree with decisions both NEW YORK and LOS ANGELES agree on? Dear god, this is practically anarchy.

He's well respected by guys like Pop and Coach K. Like others have said, Kobe, Melo and ball dominant scorers just don't really work in that system. Harden has bought in and is leading the league in assists while still scoring 28 a game.

Dude is a good coach, and having a good defensive-minded assistant doesn't hurt.

His opinion was fine. It was a good post. But when you saying Coach's d's team don't play defense I'd say championship level defense isn't the standard. It would be comparing his D to all teams. Not ONLY title teams.

Sup

Man those PHX teams were fun to watch. If it weren't for SA's freaky, amoeba-like ability to ape their style of play and beat them at it, Suns likely have one or two titles.

Kobe, Melo and ball dominant scorers just don't really work in that system

They could work in the system if they wanted. Kobe as a 5 time champion had clout to resist. Carmelo as a 0 time champion and perennial first round playoff loser, had no clout to resist the system. All in all,the Knicks as they've done many times over the last decade, made the wrong decision.

I'm convinced the Knicks have the worst ownership in the NBA. Free agents actually wanted to sign there, but the amount of terrible moves they made over time either rendered them unable to sign the best free agents, or made the team so bad and caused the organization to look so bad, that free agents (besides NY loving Melo) had no reason to sign there if they wanted to win.

It's frustrating as a Houston fan considering the free agent misses over the years, that just being in NY would have made it a lot easier. We got lucky on Bosh though, and I thought the contract offer was stupid and desperate to begin with on Miami's part.
