Yes, true. Now LTUR’s most realistic goal is to beat ULM.

C-USA killed Southern Miss football. USM used to play about 5-6 SEC teams a year(Bama, Auburn, State, Florida, Georgia, Tennessee, etc), and would play another two or so big time teams(Penn State, Nebraska, NC State, Virgina, Illinois, Indiana, just to name a few). They'd then play like Memphis, Tulane, East Carolina, ULL, LA Tech, etc. They were competitive and every now and again would get a bigger program(Nebraska, Illinois, NC State, Virginia, Kentucky) to play them in a home game. Long story short USM would be better going Independent and playing 6 or 7 P5 teams on the road every year for the payout. They could then fill their schedule out with their old rivals I mentioned. They'd get better recruits and make a shite ton more money.

I've said this before... the biggest loser in the recent realignment round was, by far, Southern Miss. It's not even close.

It's baffling to me how schools like Tulsa and ECU got the call-up to the AAC, but Southern Miss got left behind. My guess it comes down to university size, and alumni base, and not athletics.

Unfortunetly, a lot of these decisions were being made in 2012 and 2013 when POS Ellis Johnson was destroying the program, and Todd Monken was trying to build it back. From 2012-2014, they went 4-32. If these decisions had been made a couple of years earlier, during the Fedora run, or a couple of years later, during Monken's last two years, maybe it might have worked out differently.

I have no doubt that being stuck in CUSA has hurt recruiting and has hurt fundraising and has hurt coaching prospects.

As a school, they have had good football programs, good baseball programs, and decent women's programs over the last 20 years... certainly more overall success than a number of AAC programs.

They were supposed to play Auburn this year. Next year they will get Alabama, and they have MS State a couple of times on their schedule as well.

The idea of them going independent in football is interesting, just because of how bad a dumpster fire CUSA is. But I don't know how it would work for the other sports, especially baseball. Your options for weekend series in baseball and basketball, once conference play starts, are limited.

A good chunk of it is media markets,

East Carolina means NC, which is a growing state and a large media market.

USM? MS media market, which sucks, and is adjacent to the LA media market, which is also underwhelming.

It doesn’t help that MS isn’t one of the more fertile recruiting grounds in the country.

Any half-assed Texas or Florida school gets invites because it means potential recruiting inroads. MS doesn’t really have that appeal.

Southern Miss got it bad but I think Rice got it way worse. At least Southern Miss has the outside chance of getting into the AAC if they ever lose a school to the Big 12. Rice is so screwed that I think they might actually be better off going independent b/c then they could at least schedule a shitload of P5 money games every year.

I’m pretty sure they’re up there, maybe not Texas or Louisiana or Florida, but top 10

The problem is that they have SOME talent, they just don’t tend to have it in quality like LA or in quantity like Texas, Florida, or California.

Many leagues make or break their recruiting based on access to the latter three states. Most MS schools still tend to recruit LA and AL heavily in addition to their own state in order to cobble together rosters.

USM in particular made recruiting 2-3 star LA and AL kids an art form under Bower.

So, is Tulane, Houston, UCF, etc, worried that admitting Southern Miss would mean that they would take Texas, LA, Florida kids away from those schools and bring them to Southern Miss, because Southern Miss can't recruit enough kids from MS?

I get what you are saying about media markets... but I wonder with future streaming deals and a mobile workforce, how much that really matters?

Also, I think the bigger problem in MS recruiting is that MS has two Power Five programs. They don't have enough talent in the state to supply two schools, which is why MSU and Ole Miss struggle.

If there was only one, I think that one would be much more successful.

Southern Miss, whether they are in CUSA or AAC or Independent, isn't pulling talent away from Ole Miss or MSU.

No, I’m saying more along the lines of “USM doesn’t bring any media market of significant size with it and the recruiting grounds aren’t significant enough to offset it.”

Even shite teams from Florida and Texas get invited to larger conferences due to media markets and recruiting.

Tulane? Honestly, I think the league wanted to capitalize on the alumni base of New Englanders who couldn’t make it into their safety school.

I’m less familiar with recruiting from Fedora on but Bower’s recruiting was heavily based on getting lesser known kids from LA and AL like Adalius Thomas who ended up being major hidden gems.

Those are the kinds of kids who typically don’t have a ton of film on them and won’t get significant offers thrown at them. But with good scouting, you can find lots of potential.

AP: Marshall Stuck in a Sinking Ship

I had no idea about the MAJOR financial problems plaguing the conference. This article is from last year, but it doesn’t change the facts of any of the financials that are impacting the conference and Marshall’s desire for a new league. It’s so bad that Marshall would make 3x more in media rights money going back to the MAC. CUSA memebers only get $200,000 a year per university!! Think about that!! With the recent news coming out about the AAC and Boise St working on a deal, it makes one wonder if they would consider Marshall in the AAC? It’s obvious Marshall’s desire for a new home in the very near future. Marshall is a solid program with solid history that has a good following. The AAC adding Boise St, BYU and Marshall to get to 14 teams would be a major success in my opinion. CUSA is on the verge of collapse.
I wouldn't call a school where the governor lobbied for 3 years to fire a successful coach and then got his wish.... solid

I remember CUSA being a great basketball conference when all of these teams were in it:

Cincinnati
DePaul
Houston
Louisville
Marquette
Memphis
St. Louis

by the time most of the schools around the country that wanted to join it, got in, the schools that made it great, were all gone.

ECU has a much larger and nicer stadium than Southern Miss.

Tulsa is a better question.
