AP: Marshall Stuck in a Sinking Ship

I had no idea about the MAJOR financial problems plaguing the conference. This article is from last year, but it doesn’t change the facts of any of the financials that are impacting the conference and Marshall’s desire for a new league. It’s so bad that Marshall would make 3x more in media rights money going back to the MAC. CUSA memebers only get $200,000 a year per university!! Think about that!! With the recent news coming out about the AAC and Boise St working on a deal, it makes one wonder if they would consider Marshall in the AAC? It’s obvious Marshall’s desire for a new home in the very near future. Marshall is a solid program with solid history that has a good following. The AAC adding Boise St, BYU and Marshall to get to 14 teams would be a major success in my opinion. CUSA is on the verge of collapse.

The AAC is $7 million per school

The MAC is like $750k per school

The CUSA is $400k per school

Thats a pretty massive gap

MAC would also reduce travel.

They signed a new contract with CBS Sports to double their old $200k to $400k for five years starting in 2018.

So the writer could have just got confused at 200k more.

Got ya...still completely inadequate for a program like Marshall. They need to leave that conference ASAP. ANY of the G5 would take them and they’d be better off too! What a disaster CUSA is? I had no idea how bad it is.

I guess so their deals suck if they’re on CBSSN. That’s a channel no one gets because it’s on a premium tier

C-USA killed Southern Miss football. USM used to play about 5-6 SEC teams a year(Bama, Auburn, State, Florida, Georgia, Tennessee, etc), and would play another two or so big time teams(Penn State, Nebraska, NC State, Virgina, Illinois, Indiana, just to name a few). They'd then play like Memphis, Tulane, East Carolina, ULL, LA Tech, etc. They were competitive and every now and again would get a bigger program(Nebraska, Illinois, NC State, Virginia, Kentucky) to play them in a home game. Long story short USM would be better going Independent and playing 6 or 7 P5 teams on the road every year for the payout. They could then fill their schedule out with their old rivals I mentioned. They'd get better recruits and make a shite ton more money.

C-USA was killed by realignment that started the mid 2000's. That was a solid football and basketball league

It would be a GREAT time for the MAC to expand and re-add Marshall. The MAC has slowly been slipping since Marshall left. Add Marshall, Army, UConn (football only) and Liberty.

MAC East:

Marshall
Army
UConn
Liberty
Buffalo
Kent St
Ohio
Akron

MAC West:

Bowling Green
Toledo
Miami OH
EMU
CMU
WMU
Ball St
N Illinois

Makes sense geographically and those schools all need a home for football anyway with 3/4 being independent status.

Growing up Southern Miss was a yearly game for Bama the same as any SEC team. I wouldn't mind seeing that series renewed.

The single game check for hire to go out to get kicked around by an Ohio State in football is more than double their entire yearly media deal for the entire athletic department.

Its ridiculous

How does the Fun Belt line up with that?

Yeah, I saw that yesterday. I'm sure recruits would rather go play at Ohio State, Bama, Florida, etc and get their teeth kicked in than play freaking Charlotte, UTSA, Middle Tennessee, etc. I'm telling you USM needs to go Independent.

Not much better

They started at 300-400k in 2018 but are getting annual increases that are not disclosed.

Looks like MAC is a little higher than I though in 2020 at almost $1 mil per school now

Sun Belt schools will see an increase in annual revenue well above the current $100,000 per school, sources said. Under the new deal, Sun Belt schools can expect $300,000 to $400,000 per year with annual increases.

Southern Miss should. Even being from Ohio, I remember Southern Miss always being competitive. It seems like the G5 is inevitably going to go through a MAJOR realignment at some point...probably much sooner rather than later!!

At least the Sun Belt gets more exposure than CUSA. That's helped them pass CUSA in football.

The MAC would welcome Marshall back with open arms. They’ve always been a good geographical rival with Ohio.

I'm fairly certain Southern Miss killed Southern Miss football by firing their winning head coach.
