go back to true sudden death so we can separate the men from the pansies.
the good old tough guy vs pansies argument. This is a subject of making the rules fair to both teams. Toughness has nothing to do with it, gorilla.

I think OT should work on the idea that the game ends when one team ends up with the lead and possession of the football, and that is the team that wins.

there was nothing unfair about sudden death overtime.... and it was actually pretty exciting

Leave the current sudden death rules, change the method of deciding who gets the ball first from a coin toss to something else. Exactly what? I have no idea.

Yeah that's an interesting point.
It's not perfect.

What is the reason for OT? To determine a winner and loser. That's it.
How can we make the OT rules fair? That is the issue here. My proposal (on numerous occasions), if the 1st team receiving doesn't score, make it sudden death.
If 1st team scores FG, 2nd team must play for the win(must have TD)
If 1st team scores TD and make XP, 2nd team must Score TD and go for 2.
This way both teams get the ball and a winner can be determine in an efficient manner.

But let's say the games a shootout and it's 35-35. Neither D is stopping anyone and both teams are scoring at will. The team that wins te coin toss wins the game and the other team shouldn't get a chance? Despite both D not being able to stop either offense.
Well in your scenario, neither team will stop the other one on the first possessions and then the team that won the coin toss ends up with the ball to win it on their second possession

Perfect. Easy and fair. Win toss. Go one D. Play normal rules

And 2 vs 1 would be ok?
It's not 1 vs 0 that is the issue...the issue is 0.

The ref. screwed it up.
Should be suspended.

Meh. People would still be bitching about the team winning the coin toss having an advantage.
If they're going to change it, it should be as mentioned by the poster above. Play until the team with the lead also has possession.

Should be a ten minute OT period
Score at the end is the final score
Ties and all
Score at the end is the final score
Ties and all

I enjoy how CFB does it because it can be pretty intense all he way through, but just for the sake of differentiating themselves, I think they should just do like basketball and have a 5 minute overtime and whoever has the most points at the end of that wins.

He's right IMO, sudden death should start with the 2nd possession in OT, no matter what.
the int is not sudden death. What is really funny is that if they both score on the first possession and then the Jets win because they got the ball first anyway.
How about this for an idea. If you don't win the toss play some defense or STFU

Costas is a fgot and so are most of you.
If you want the ball don't let the other team score a TD on its first possession. Defense is suppose to be a pretty big part of the game.

Costas is a blowhard who has no business talking sports on national tv. As for the NFL OT rules, I've always felt that they should adopt the college rules, but modify it so that the starting line of scrimmage after each quarter moves back 5 yards after each quarter. So first overtime period it's at the 25, 2nd it's at the 30, 3rd it's at the 35, and so forth until a winner is determined.

I totally agree with him. Both teams should get the ball in OT. Let's say you have the greatest QB and offense in the history of football, but your defense is bad. Just because of a coin flip, your Odense may not even see the field. The college OT is WAY better, but have NFL teams start at the 40 yard line.

What if you have the greatest kicker ever? That great kicker can no longer win a game with a fg on the initial drive in overtime. Thats not fair.
