Caitlyn Jenner is being honored by ESPN with the Arthur Ashe Courage Award at the upcoming ESPYs, a move that has been met with much controversy. There was a hoax about Jenner getting the award over an Iraq war vet, but people are still upset at Jenner receiving the award over more deserving people, despite Jenner being a very famous sports name who’s being heralded for her courage to publicly transition.

Bob Costas is one of those critics, saying on The Dan Patrick Show today that while he wishes Jenner “all the happiness in the world” and is encouraged by how much more tolerant America has become, he’s not on board with the decision.

“Awarding the Arthur Ashe award to Caitlyn Jenner is just a crass exploitation play,” Costas said. “It’s a tabloid play. In the broad world of sports, I’m pretty sure they could have found –– and this is not anything against Caitlyn Jenner – –I’m pretty sure they could have found someone who was much closer to actively involved in sports who would have been deserving of what that ward represents.”

And while he didn’t deny it took courage for Caitlyn Jenner to come out, he believes ESPN made the decision for the “gawker factor” and could have found more deserving candidates.

I don't often agree with Bob Costas, but when I do, it's about Caitlyn Jenner...

That's been my issue from day 1. Bruce/Caitlyn Jenner has not been involved in or made any appreciable contribution to sports in about 35 years. At least Arthur Ashe brought tennis to underprivileged kids after he retired.

For the first time ever, I agree with Bob Costas. This feels weird.

he's right.

this was just ESPN doing a jack knife into the ratings pool off the high dive.

what's sadder than actually giving him the award is the fact that something like this would increase ratings

Giving Caitlin Jenner a sports award is about like giving a Lifetime Achievement Grammy to Debby Boone. They were the two biggest things in popular culture in 1976 and haven't done a thing in their fields since.

Brave. One day he could earn a Bob Costas This Orange Is Orange Award.

Bruce never should have said he was a conservative.

It was a good run, Costa's.

696 times in a row, he had lined up with the liberal, PC mindset.

I'm sure it didn't hurt that ABC/DISNEY/ESPN is doing this, as opposed to NBC. He wouldn't have criticized NBC to save his life.

He's right.

Jenner is as relevant to sports as Dan Quayle is to politics.

He has no business getting an ESPY.

I don't think it is exploitation in a real sense, more of an agenda opportunity by a mega company.

The young lady that died of cancer, the high school girl, would have been the obvious choice to me.

But what do I know.
