By JOHN KOBLIN JULY 22, 2015 The popular sports and culture writer Bill Simmons is heading to HBO. HBO announced Wednesday that it would be the exclusive television home for Mr. Simmons and that he would get a talk show that will debut in 2016. His contract with HBO starts in October. Additionally, Mr. Simmons will have a production deal with HBO and will do video podcasts, similar to what he did at ESPN. At the sports network, he helped create ESPN’s “30 for 30” series of sports documentaries. ESPN ended its relationship with Mr. Simmons in May when it said it would not renew his contract. He has not appeared on ESPN since, and left his editing job at the website Grantland. In a statement, Mr. Simmons said, “It’s no secret that HBO is the single best place for creative people in the entire media landscape.” He added that after talking with the network, “it was hard to imagine being anywhere else.” Michael Lombardo, HBO’s president of programming, said in a statement: “We have been fans of Bill Simmons and his work for a very long time. His intelligence, talent and insights are without precedent in the areas he covers. We could not be more thrilled for him to bring those talents to HBO and to become a signature voice at the network, spanning the sports and pop culture landscapes.”

Great move. Can't wait for his podcast to come back.

At this point, I just want his podcast back.

Will be interesting to see who BS takes with him from Grantland.

Hopefully the video podcasts and the weekly show are separate things things. And no word on his writing articles, yet. HBO's website would be kind of an awkward place for them.

Yeah I don't see him writing for HBO.
I am just excited for some HBO 30 for 30's

He will have an online home for his writing for sure
That will be a separate announcement
So excited he is coming back, can't wait for his Richard Dietsch interview once his ESPN contract expires

That is going to be awesome
Meanwhile, Russillo is staying at ESPN
That's got to be the most Russillo way ever to announce that

Is he currently the best asset ESPN has? Seems like everyone is leaving them.

HBO was the best choice from the beginning. He needed a place stay relevant year round, which is why a place like nbatv would never work.
Looking forward to the podcasts and how they use him online.
The weekly tv show will be interesting. TV host hasn't been a strength of his. Im guessing he'll try to split it between sports and pop culture, which could be ideal for the HBO audience, even a better fit than espn, if done right.

He'll yeah, plus with HBO he doesn't have to deal with all of Disney's BS or need to make the NFL happy b

Good move for Simmons.
It amazes me how ESPN dumped him, yet they still pay Skip Bayless/Screamin A Smith. I have a feeling that has to do with focus groups of really, really, REALLY ignorant people.

This is fantastic. This has the potential to be what I hoped Grantland would be. Simmons unfiltered.
