Bill Belichick: NFL Games Should Have a Full Overtime Period

Bill Belichick used to bring up a pretty interesting idea for modifying overtime—and it was to take sudden death, and go the other way entirely by setting a finite time and playing a whole period out. He’d raise the idea when college OT came up. He didn’t like the college overtime because it didn’t closely enough resemble regulation, by marginalizing special teams. Similarly, sudden death would marginalize the element of the clock.

“When it’s first team to score, or however the rules are set, or the way it is in college, that’s not the end of the game,” Belichick told WEEI in 2012. “It’s like basketball, you go and play basketball it comes down to the end of regulation, you’re making three-point shots, you’re fouling to get the ball back. OK, great, so now you’re in overtime. It’s the same thing (with a set clock). You get that same strategic element at the end of the basketball game. In football, we’ve lost that with the rules that we have now.” Asked what he wants, Belichick shot back, “Put some time on the clock and play. ... Play to the end of the game. Put 10 minutes, eight minutes (on the clock), whatever we decide.”

He's correct of course, with a big caveat. Ideally you would play a full quarter of normal football.

However given how physically demanding football games are (compared to other sports) there are clearly major pluses to sort of getting the game concluded as quickly as possible.

Hoe often does a team go to overtime in a season? Maybe once per season st most

Let's say a player has a 10 year career, that's 10 times he might go to over time.

If we say right the game will be 10 minutes regardless that probably only adds 3 or 4 minutes to the game.

That's 40 minutes extra over a career of which he will probably be on the field for half of it so actually extending his minutes played 20 minutes over a 10 year career.

Is that really going to make the difference?

It's not so much the extra time but when it occurs.

It's not just 10 extra minutes, it's 10 extra minutes immediately after 4 full quarters of play.

Been saying this for a while. I'd even be fine if they let regular season games end in ties after regulation and only did OT in the playoffs

They could just keep the clock moving with fewer pauses and timeouts. Maybe allow teams one timeout each. Would give overtime its own feel while keeping it relatively short.

Forgive me if I have no sympathy for 53 guys who get paid anywhere between a small fortune and a fortune to play football for an additional 10-15 minutes once in a blue moon.

This as well. Sometimes teams just deserve a tie for an evenly played game IMO. I think having more ties on the records would actually make the race for the playoffs more fun.

The NFL don't give a shite about player safety. They wanna add another week to the regular season. The Reason NFL wouldn't do this is because TV. NFL doesn't want games running longer and cutting into their prime time games.

I told someone the other day how it's crazy that NFL games almost always seem to end right on time 3 hrs/3:15 more or less. Meanwhile, LSU and bama are about to begin the second quarter over on CBS...

I don't understand how this became such a controversial stance. Sometimes, teams are just very evenly matched. Why reduce the outcome to something based much more on luck (i.e. a quirky play or a bad bounce during an OT period)?

There is no reason to play overtime in the regular season. The tie breaking system is already in place for playoff seating.

To go along with my Dad's line of thinking.

The saints win one Super Bowl and the entire overtime process has to be changed.

College OT is GOAT. Just have NFL teams start from their own 45 since kickers at that level have stupid range

I don't see why we have to try and change the game every year.

Sudden death is GOAT. It's a shame they changed it.

The clock stops on first downs in college. There's your answer.
