McDavid deal done.

quote:

@FriedgeHNIC: McDavid number is 8x$12.5. The number dropped by $750K/year after news got out last week.

McDavid officially signs: 8 years, $100 million for a $12.5 AAV. Highest paid player in history.

Worth it.

Great day for the Oilers, McDavid and their fans.

He's worth every penny and worth the price of admission to go watch him.

Along with Methot who is going to let Klingberg excel even more. If Seguin and Benn can stay healthy, I'm loving where we're at

Dallas could be the most improved team for 2017/18. Let's hope Bishop can stay healthy. I think Dallas will compete this year.

Dallas had three major issues last season:

Injuries gutting their forward corps, a young blueline, and terrible goaltending. I doubt they'll have the same rash of injuries, plus they strengthened their forwards. they added Bishop, who is awesome. And the blueline is a year older, plus has some imported experience. they should improve in all three areas of weakness and even better, Chicago got worse. Stars should be a legit contender next season.

Yeah, felt a bit like a like gasp. They'll still be good, but they are taking a step back. However, the Predators are loaded. They weren't a one-year wonder. and the Wild are pretty stout as well, and you can't overlook a team with Tarasenko on it with the Blues. It's still a tough division.

Yeah, last year was definitely rough after the previous year. I love what Nill and Hitch have done to address needs, as well as get better. Now it just comes down to staying healthy and we should be fine

Not if the fans want to win a cup. That contract will be an albatross on them for many years.

They will be forced to deal their young talent, to clear cap space, yearly.

That's the reason I would like to see the salary cap loosened up just a bit. It's not much fun to put together a dynastic team only to break it up in a few years. The sport needs dynasty teams like the NBA has not parity like the NFL. It's hard enough to win the Cup anyways.

Need a Birdish rule, 1 contract does not count against the cap. This way you can keep a vet who's being paid a lot, and allow him to retire with his old club

I don't think it's an albatross at all, he signed for the same percentage of the cap as Crosby did but for an extra 3 years.

I do agree they will have to find cheap talent and use players on ELCs. I think the Draisaitl contract will be the most telling for their future, with someone like McDavid, you lock him up for as long as possible for whatever AAV he wants. It's not his job to surround the team with talent.

Long-term moving forward the Oilers have a core of:

X - McDavid (12.5) - X
Lucic (6) - Draisaityl (7.5-8) - Puljujarvi
X - Nugent-Hopkins (6) - Kassian (1.95)

Klefbom (4.167) - Larsson (4.167)
Sekera (5.5) - Russel (4)
Nurse - Benning

Talbot (4.16)

They have a lot of cheap talent right now, but drafting will become paramount in the next 5 years. I could see Maroon leaving after this season, Nuge is probably too expensive for a 3C, Nurse and Benning both need contracts, what they make will be determined this year, I could see 2.5 on bridge deals or 4 long term.

Drai can run both 2C and 1RW, and McClellan loves using centers as wingers. That might be Nuge's saving grace in Edmonton.

Overall, I like the d corps for their cap hit, if Nurse or Benning take the next step and turn into a solid 3/4 pair then they'll have a deep if unspectacular core.

They won't go deep every year but should be contenders for the next decade in my opinion.

I vehemently disagree. The competition is healthy and the parity is what makes the playoffs the best amongst all sports
