Relatively speaking, that is for the day they played in...
Jim Brown is the only correct answer.
As far as talent Eric Dickerson would at least need to be in the conversation. Seeing a back of his size and height turn the corner and outrun every DB on the field was a sight to behold.

Barry is a tough one to place because his carries would go like -1, -2, 35. He was amazing to watch and no one will ever run like him again, but you certainly didn't want him as your guy if you just needed three yards. People say that is because his line was garbage. Barry plus Emmitt Smith's offensive line would have been nice to see.

Barry was the best I saw, but I'm surprised only a couple of people have mentioned Tomlinson. In his prime, the guy was special.
According to Pro Football Reference, the two most similar players to LT in regards to overall quality of their careers are Barry Sanders and Marshall Faulk.
ETA: The 4th most similar player to LT is actually Edgerrin James.

No one ever mentions OJ in these threads
Is he really forgotten, or just swept under the rug?
Then a few months later I saw Bayless claim that LT was a "borderline HOFer"
Always seemed like the perfect example of FT/ESPN SOP -- throw shite against the wall, and just assume no one will remember what you said before

The correct answer is Emmitt Smith.

I would try so hard to run like Barry Sanders in the empty lot games in the neighborhood. I wish someone would have recorded me so I can look back and get a good laugh at myself.

It really is Smith. His numbers dwarf everybody else. Even if you just compare their first 10 seasons, Smith has Sanders beat (if you add in playoff numbers). He has somehow become underrated..

I think the fact that many people believe he stayed in the game with the single goal of topping sweetness lost him some respect. Not saying that was the case, or even that it matters if true, but just my observation.
