Kansas's 2003 team that lost the title game was probably as good as any that you mentioned. I remember thinking their 2010 team was going to waltz through the tournament and they had one of the most WTF performances of all time when they lost to UNI. Self has had two incredible tourney runs and a lot of other way too early tourney exits. He's very hit or miss in March.

Self is lucky that Memphis couldn't hit a free throw.

1999 Duke though swept the ACC and had one loss the whole season before losing to UCONN. 5 lottery picks on that team. If they had won that game, they'd be considered one of the best ever.

To my dying day I will never be able to explain how they lost.

I agree, but the shot Chalmers hit was one of the most clutch in tourney history. And what Kansas did to UNC in the semis was illegal in several states. An absolute beating.

I am just wondering what the head shake was for. I'm hoping it's because he's shaking his head at how Coach K couldn't win a title with that team. That's mildly understandable.
If it's why the 1999 Duke team that won 34 of 37 games by double digits, won the ACC tournament with a 25 point per game margin, went undefeated in the ACC, and had one single digit game in conference play is being mentioned as a top team to not win a title, then that's up there with calling Jabari Parker fat, Adrien Payne being a better pro than Jabari Parker, and Jahlil Okafor's lack of a crossover dribble and outside shot being a huge weakness as classic moments in MSB posting history.
ETA: Just looking for potential Mount Rushmore moments since I'm at 2, perhaps 3.

Yep, add 2010 Kentucky with Wall, Bledsoe, Cousins, and Patterson.

1996 and 2010 are my two favorite UK teams, even if 1996 UK cost me $200 in my first ever March Madness pool (I picked UMass )

2010 team did not have an outside shooter. If Jodie Meeks came back, we would had won the title…no doubt.
Also, 2003 UK team ran through the SEC undefeated…Keith Bogans had the ankle injury before the Elite 8…fricking Dewayne Wade goes off on us.

The 2004 UK team that inexplicably lost to UAB was really damn good too.
That could have been one of the best Final Fours of all time if they had gotten there. UConn vs Duke and Oklahoma St vs Kentucky would have been appointment television.

UNI always seems due to have a good team. I remember them beating the 2006 LSU Final Four team in the regular season. For a while, Self seemed to catch these types of teams at the right time.

Team that flew under the radar in these discussions are 1985 St Johns team
They were ranked 1 through most of the year. They were as good as shooters as anyone (especially if Mullin got hot). They won the Big East Regular Season.
Roster included:
Mullin
Glass
Berry
Jackson
Wennington

Big East had 3 teams get in the Final Four in 1985 but Georgetown blew St John's out multiple times that year (including in Final Four).
That's an awesome starting five though.

They lost by 12 in BECT and 15 at Landover
That isn't blowout. The game inLexington I'll give you.
But they lost 4 games all year and beat every team they played I believe.
Eta: Nevermind they beat Georgetown but didn't avenge other loss.
