re: Andy Roddick to retire after US OpenPosted by Dinkle on 8/30/12 at 7:35 pm to Gnar Cat21
He's proof positive that you can't be an alltime great if all you have is a great serve. However, that final at Wimby with Roger F was an all time great!

Had Federer not existed, he would have been an all time great. Go back and look at all of the major finals and major semi finals that he lost to Fed.
Not saying Roddick would have won all of those, but he would have won more than he lost.

He had such an inconsistent career, always rooted for him hard though. I won't ever forget the wimbeldon final with Fed.
Career by the numbers
quote:
9: Consecutive years that Roddick finished the season ranked in the top 10, a streak that ended last year when he was No. 14. He is ranked No. 22 now.
12: Consecutive years that Roddick has won at least one title (he has two this year), matching Roger Federer for longest active streak.
Most guys would kill for numbers like that. Andy had a pretty solid career and had he gotten the breaks he would have a Wimbledon or two to his name.

If Joe Montana, Jerry Rice, and the rest of the 49ers didn't exist, Bobby Hebert would have won 4 Super Bowls!

If Alabama didn't exist, Cholly Mac would have been Knute Rockne.

But Federer did exist. This is dumb as all frick. And top 15 grass court player of all time
I've hated (ok not hate just really disliked) roddick his whole career, but if you can't understand how amazing of achievements those are in tennis, you don't follow it very closely.
Roddick will go down in the hall of fame and one of the greatest American male tennis players.

Americans in my lifetime who were better:
Ashe
Connors
McEnroe
Sampras
Chang
Courier
Agassi
That's just off the top of my head. And it doesn't even include 60s or earlier

I have always pulled for Andy, but I'm glad to see he'll retire. He just didn't have it anymore. Hope we goes out with a bang.
