I get Magic's was in the Finals, but Jordan defined the generation more than Magic ever did.
For Gen X - Magic was a little early...the NBA hadn't yet rebounded from the disastrous 70's - but Magic's shot and finally beating the Lakers transformed the NBA.
But Jordan was the bigger star and influence on Gen Xers most likely. Everyone talked about Jordan in the late 80's way before he had won a single title.

You are aware Kareem led the Lakers with 32-12-3 in the 80 playoffs, 33-14-3-5 blocks in the 80 Finals, won the 85 Finals MVP and led the Lakers to the NBA playoffs the 3 seasons prior to Magic's acquisition, right? Just making sure this is all established.

Well first of all:
No. Unless you want to claim he tied his numbers in the 90s. He started 82 games 5 times in the 90s and 3 times in the 80s
Most of those other stats he has slightly better numbers in 89 then his 90s numbers. Otherwise, his 90s numbers are better.
Also, hard to define a generation with zero titles and 1 MVP. A lot easier with 6 titles and 4 MVPs.

Magic wasn't the best player on his team.

I'm just as impressed with the dress of the people in the stands as I am the shot. So many ties and nice clothes throughout the stadium.

Sure, but in the late 80s and early 90s, there was also talk that Drexler was the better player. The idea that Jordan was even in the neighborhood of his current status back then is balogna.
ETA: Not that Drexler was better than Jordan straight up, but that Drexler was going to get a championship before Jordan. Shouldn't have phrased it the way I did originally.

Nobody thought Drexler was better than Jordan, they always thought of Drexler as the 2nd best player.

More points and rebounds per game, higher FT PCT, more blocks per game, better playoff numbers than Magic it's all there.
There is so much bullshite in this post, I dont even know where to start.
quote:
More points
Magic was never a scorer. Kareem was. Even with that, the difference between the two was nothing.
- In the 80's, Magic averaged 19.9 pts while Kareem averaged 20.2 pts
quote:
rebounds per game
Kareem didnt average more rebounds than Magic.
- In the 80's, Magic averaged 7.3 rebs while Kareem averaged 7.2 rebs
quote:
higher FT PCT
FT PCT in the 80's:
Magic: 84.4%
Kareem: 74.0%
quote:
more blocks per game
Congrats, you finally got something right. The center averaged more blocks than the point guard. Wanna take a guess at which player averaged more assists?
Not to mention that Magic led the Lakers in Win Shares from 1981 to 1991
quote:
better playoff numbers than Magic it's all there
Playoff averages:
................PTS...REB...AST...FG%...FT%...STL...BLK
Magic......19.1.....7.4....12.8...52%....83%....1.9....0.4
Kareem...20.3.....7.0.....2.8....53%....75%....0.9....2.1
Magic won 3 Finals MVPs in the 80's; Kareem won 1
Playoff PER: Magic 23.2; Kareem 19.9
Playoff WS/48: Magic.211; Kareem .147
Playoff VORP: Magic 13.8; Kareem 6.1
Also in the 80's:
Magic won 3 league MVP's; Kareem won 1
Magic was 1st team All-NBA 7 times; Kareem 4 times
Magic had a PER of 24.5 in the 80's; Kareem 21.2
The amount of nonsense in your post is amazing.
You should stick to Redskin football knowledge

Should've read the preceding posts that clearly referred to Bird/Magic dude, that's what I was clearly distinguishing between at the time.

Yeah I should have been more clear. No one though Drexler was better on the court, but he had the team accomplishments that were escaping Jordan until his first title.

You can be the captain of a team without being its best player fwiw.
I would argue that Magic was clearly the Lakers' best player by 1983 or 1984 at least imo.

Then disregard what I quoted from your post in mine and replace it with this nonsense you posted just prior to that:
quote:
Magic's great but he wasn't even the best player on the Lakers for the first half that decade, Kareem "The Captain" was then Magic supplanted him in 87.
What I posted applies to that bullshite as well

It was so strange that they almost left Drexler of the Olympic team in 92, but he was the 2nd best player in the NBA. Laetner was more of a lock then Drexler.

How can someone "clearly" be adjudicated the Lakers best player in 83 or 84 when he wasn't even the leading scorer on the team and accounted for more TOs incurred than Kareem? Kareem was also the team's best low-post defender leading the team in blocks and led the team in PER in both playoffs those years. I simply don't buy that argument.
Posted on 6/9/17 at 3:25 pm to ThePTExperience1969
Magic produced more win shares than Kareem from 1982 until his retirement. Magic also had a higher VORP every year starting in 1982.
Just looking at the traditional stats, Magic in 1982 (age 22) averaged 18.6/9.6/9.5 and led the league in steals per game while shooting 54% from the field

So? Kareem had 24-9-3-3 blocks on 58% shooting and led the 82 Lakers in PER(age 35), still led the team in scoring in the 82 playoffs. Do I need to re-emphasize he won the finals MVP in 85 at AGE 38?

"First half that decade"
Also worth noting Kareem was in his mid-late 30s when he recorded these stats.

As many times as that's been called iconic, one thing remains very obvious. Jordan had absolutely no reason to adjust that shot. It wasn't even being contested.
