People who are overweight growth and tech will probably have larger declines. The Nasdaq is down 33% this year.

"Man I don’t even want to think about it. My dad retired 3 months ago. I know my parents planned and saved very well, but you can’t really plan for a 25% decrease in worth."
Unfortunately, add nearly a 15% loss in purchasing power due to inflation. I hope to work far beyond what seems necessary as a combination of loss and inflation can hit hard and fast.

With the losses from this downturn, I'm at 3.8% over 5 yrs....
The S&P 500 was in the 2,600 range 5 years ago...

This is probably the worst advice on the entire internet.
I will say, 2-3 years is on the longer end of the spectrum. Typically I'll recommend closer to a year - as in if you need the money in the next 12 months, just stick it in cash. No one knows what the market is going to do in the next 12 months. If they say they do - they are delusional.
If someone needs $50k in 2 years, I might invest some in stocks but mostly in bonds and some in cash. The longer the time horizon, the more confident I am that they will make money in the market.

What do they mean by “starting salary”?
Posted on 10/3/22 at 4:32 pm to OldSouth
Yeah I was a little confused about that too. Is that my salary at my first job? Because 10x that is nowhere close to what I think I need for retirement. Not even half.

Didn’t say you were wrong, just shared my experience related to the OP.

Down just over 10% with 63% equity exposure. Significantly underweight growth, sold my commodities exposure in mid-June, and used ultra short term fixed income for most bond holdings. This excludes years worth of I-bonds, many with fixed components over 2%. Have acquired 6-figures of PDO ranging from 13.34 - 14.08 which is throwing off significant income in a Roth, then there is this guy:

The expense ratio on that fund is 1.15% that will add up quick with a large amount of shares.

Not really sure but it’s a good amount. However I won’t need it for 25 years so I try not to even worry about it. I would have a different opinion if I was about to retire.
