I think Matt Stuller may be up there. I think the Martin family from the Alexandria area owns a ton of land. I guess it depends if you look at liquidity/cash or total assets.

I think of Tabasco when I think private/family business in LA. I'm sure there are other companies that make/have more money but I don't think there are many.

Not necessairly by "worth" but only one LA company made the Forbes List of America's Largest Private Companies and that was Turner Industries.

I'm not sure about that. I know he's a big public figure around the state but there are a lot of private guys that might just have as much cash/assets through their companies to compete.

Benson is the only Louisiana resident on the Forbes 400 list. I'm not saying that Forbes is necessarily the end-all be-all, but I think it's a pretty good starting point. He's the only one on there at 307.

I also think I remember reading something a few months ago during the whole Benson Trust/Gayle/Rita drama that there was speculation that no one else in the state of Louisiana could afford to buy the Saints alone at current estimated franchise values (estimated at $1.5B+).

I would send the Benson conglomerate - when you consider all the trusts, all the various companies, etc, is probably the wealthiest.

However, a lot of that business isn't Louisiana business, or even based in Louisiana.

My bet as well, specifically Gary Chouest. I've heard from reliable sources inside ECO that his net worth is in the $7-12B range.

Benson isn't even close.

The best thing about the Chouests though is that they haven't let the money change them. They are all incredibly down to earth nice people.

I mean, they do basically own all of Port Fourchon. As well as vessels and ports in West Africa, Brazil and I think SE Asia.

I'm sure they're nice but they do own a race track as a toy and tried to buy the Hornets.

The racetrack is Laney Chouest. He is no longer a part of ECO.

They also own a fleet of really nice planes including a G5. However what I meant was they aren't a bunch of arrogant braggarts.

FIFY
they just bought out La Tour golf course and priced everyone out, just so they can play by themselves.

Yeah, that was Laney as well. He definitely is enjoying the buyout money and this was always the plan to allow for people to do racing and golf trips.

I can see how he would rub some people the wrong way, he's an .....interesting individual. The rest of the family is great though.

There's and old jack up rig on the north end of port Fourchon that I was told Gary bought and is remodeling it for a "camp" that he's going to put out in the gulf.

If true, that's pretty sweet.

Moody fly isn't even remotely close to the Chouests. I figure GC bailed on the Hornets cause he didn't want to provide the level of financial disclosure required by the league. He is notoriously closed mouthed.
