Even then, faculty jobs only start around $40k and it's the lucky ones who see six figure salaries decades into the job.

Definitely different in chemistry and physics. New faculty at GT start a little over $90k. Some national labs start postdocs at $85k

Why did you take issue with the equation of self-employment and higher risk-reward?

In what industry do you work?

I guess the Financial/Insurance industries would be the appropriate category, but more a mix of marketing/sales, consulting, & some Venture capitalism.

I wasn't making an argument against you dipshit. I was pointing out that you sounded like an a-hole. Congrats on proving me right.

You are a prime example of money not buying class. Probably the same reason you felt the need to brag at your 10 year high school reunion.

I suppose I took issue with his pompous attitude towards the self employed, who are the backbone of the US economy, with moronic statements like this:

quote:

You also pay $20,000 a year to get healthcare with a high deductible while I pay $120/month.

If nobody ever went into business for themselves, he wouldn't have a job, neither would anyone else in America BTW.

So yes, Lynx is a PUSSY, and he should go into work tomorrow, find the owner of the company he works for, kneel down and suck his cock for having the courage to be self employed once upon a time. America was built by entrepreneurs, and we deserve a Thank you.

Maybe it's because you think all of us college educated people are out to get you, so you started throwing out a whole bunch of insults.

I don't think you are all out to get me, nor do I think any less of somebody with a college education. I do have a problem with those with a college education who think that little piece of paper makes them superior. I know that's not all of you.

This dude is ridiculous. I had never noticed him until a couple bitcoin threads appeared and then this all at once.

I might be an entrepreneur one day if I feel it to be the best opportunity for myself. Doing otherwise, however, does not make me a "pussy" as you continue to spout.

I have a two year old and will be encouraging vet med...real vet med to include livestock, not just giving 5 lb lap dogs a "wellness" exam. Wish I had done that.

Hard working, talented people with adequate social skills will be successful, college or not. The reverse is also true.

Is the medical field the only/the best way to pursue such right now?

One thing I've noticed is that almost everyone has a "grass is greener" perspective, and that things were better in their field at some vague time in the past.

Doctors are a great example. Everyone thinks doctors have it so great, and doctors think the medical field is crumbling all around them and tell people not to go to med school. Same for a lot of computer fields -- people in it think the days when anyone could really strike it rich are past.

I think in a lot of ways the country has never recovered its economic confidence from the dotcom bust/01 recession. Seems like ever since then people have been a lot more economically pessimistic and fearful than is warranted by the facts. Which would go a long way to explain the failure of the employment #s to catch up to the market recovery.

Oh, no question whatsoever.
. . . and taking a 2nd look at the OP, Medicine at the AD/BS/MS level is solid. I simply misread the OP as referencing physicians.

Certainly, even the outlook for MDs could change if efforts at socialization fail. But individual risk in taking that gamble is very high. At this point, my advice to potential docs is go into medicine for the challenge, do it for the reward, do it for the same reason one might join the Peace Corps. Do not go into medicine if money is high on a list of priorities.

To be clear, future MDs will probably do OK money-wise, and non-insurance dependent fields (i.e., plastics) should continue to do very well, but given intellect and work-ethic at play, other fields are far better entry options in 2013 going forward for folks with those capacities IMO.
