No, definitely not worth arguing. You have less than a year with the company, and you want all of Thanksgiving week off? Most bosses would laugh at that request. Holidays off generally go to those with seniority; newbs in most businesses get to work the holiday hours. C'est la vie. Working one day in the week is hardly a hardship.

Well, we have 2 teams and we rotate Friday's off. For Thanksgiving and Christmas, our team always takes the entire week off. Our offices are closed Thursday & Friday and since it's our Friday to be off, we get Wednesday. So, it takes 4 vacation days total to be off both Thanksgiving and Christmas weeks. I was told that from the beginning so no, I didn't come in and expect to be giving a full holiday week off.

I'm not going to argue this, I was just curious how you guys interpret it.

Nope.

You work mostly 9 hour days and if your boss wants to apply that to vacation and sick time, that's his decision to make. You can go to HR and ask for the official policy. I would get more than a year in, though, before challenging anything.

Yeah, I'm just gonna work that Monday. It'll be dead anyway. But, to me, 2 weeks vacation means 2 weeks vacation.

I have no problem with it being 80 hours but the offer letter should state 80 hours.

I agree with you. Basically cheats you out of 1 vacation day. I wouldn't challenge it but it seems like a petty thing for your boss to do

I had the same setup of hours at my old job. They did the same and required days off to burn 9 hours of PTO.

work the 9/80 schedule (9 hour day M-Th, 8 hour day F, 9 hour day M-Th, off Friday). So 1 week I work 44 hours, the next I work 36.

I love it. I'm busy enough that the days fly by and that every other Friday off is awesome.

Keep it. Don't be stupid like me and end up working 7am to 8-9 pm Monday-Saturday.

two things:
1) your new, don't rock the boat
2) your boss is being petty

rule 1 supersedes rule 2

My current job is just like that where I work 44 hr week 1 and week 2 36 hours. Per our company policy it states that if we take vacation and it is normal 9 hour day for us then it is 9 hours of vacation. If I worked normal 10 hrs a day (every Friday off) then it would be 10 hrs of vacation and so on.... Same if I had to take sick time or medical or whatever else it would be my normal hours let it be either 9 hrs (M-R) or 8 hrs for Friday. The only way it would work is if in the end you worked out a deal with your boss that you were totaling 80 hrs a per pay check (for biweekly pay) or whatever you should have for your pay period.

Now for us if our off day ends up on a holiday either A) we can bank the holiday and use later (ps holidays only count for 8 hours for us .... I complelty disagree if it is my normal 9 hour day then it should count for 9 hours but I then will either have to use 1 hour of vacation or 'make it up')
or B) use the day before or day after as my off day

Don't rock the boat but just check into the company policy if you want to know more, it is probably writen down somewhere....

In our vacation planner, it shows 80 hours. I had 10 days picked out (6 for baby, 2 for Thanksgiving, 2 for Christmas) so I went and put 8 hours next to each day, totaling 80 hours.

You keep saying your offer letter states "2 weeks vacation" but here you are taking individual days, not whole weeks.

See how it can be interpreted differently? You are trying to take days off, not weeks, while your boss is breaking it down by hours, as he should. This is why your offer letter should have stated hours. Your boss is being petty, but he is correct.

If you think that's bad, I know of soneone whose work did kind of the opposite.

Stated that they had 2 weeks off.

Had 4-10 hour days.

Took a vacation from M-Thursday.

Told by HR that they are only allowed to take vacation for days they are scheduled, and they only pay vacation in 8 hour days.

There's nothing to argue. You are given 2 weeks, 80 hours. Taking a normal day off would be 9 hours, per your schedule. If you worked 4-10s, do you think "2 weeks" means you'd get 10 days (10 hours each) off?

What if you took the 4 days of your short week off, twice? Now you've been off for 2 full weeks, and still have 4 hours of vacation remaining.

I also work the 9/80, and it's great. The 9 hours can mess with vacation day timing, but if you work it into your normal Friday off (or move them around if you're allowed), it can be an advantage (fewer actual vacation days required).

It seems to me, like you'd have to count one of the Fridays off as a vacation day, using your logic.

I would imagine this policy is in place to prevent someone from scheduling 10 9-hour days and getting 90 hours off instead 80. It may seem petty, but it looks like your boss maybe trying to avoid a clever employee circumventing the policy.
