signa7, I read all the chapters and I would suggest that anyone else do the same but just use it to reinforce what's in the guide. imo, Read the guide first. Read the chapters once focusing on what is in the guide and know where to find something if you need to go back to it. Read the guide many more times... highlight... make notes. If you don't understand something, ask in zoom session or on his discussion forum. He will answer.

Like all these classes, once you get that first test out of the way, you'll know exactly what you need to do to prepare for the rest.

I'm all for free textbooks but this ACCT book is a drag!

Hopefully it gets better after Chapter 1.

For Vines what I did was to make an outline of all the book chapters. I created a word document with the headings and sub-headings for each section of the chapter. Then as I worked through the reading guide and zoom sessions I highlighted the sections on my outline that were in noted in the reading guide & chats. I would then go back and read those book sections and fill in my outline with notes from the book and focused on those areas. I did read every page, but focused on the highlighted areas.

Also I would rewrite the reading guide in my own words.

As all of this is happening, I simultaneously created a separate sheet of possible test questions and answers as if I was giving the exam.

Lastly, I had an excel sheet with formulas on it. Also I did use the tool kits included with the book. They had excel sheets with formulas and I was able to tweak the sheets to work the more difficult problems for me such as Black-Scholes. By using excel, not only can it calculate the formula quicker, but as you input the formula (or tweak the toolkit) you learn how to work it manually.

The Accounting book has a lot of terms and definitions. I forgot the first two chapters when I read chapter 6. The first 3 chapters are very dry. Hopefully there will be more calculation, which will make it easier.

I got some info from Dr. Meeks that LSUS is going to a new policy where professors must choose free open-source textbooks for classes going forward.

While this sounds good, I get a little concerned that the quality of the textbooks utilized may suffer. I am the first one to complain about the high cost of textbooks. When a book gets over $100 it gets crazy. At the same time, I think Dr. Meeks is concerned because this would effect his ability to require certain management books (not actual textbooks) for his classes. I just had a book called Play to Win that was required and only cost $22 on Amazon. I think it was worth it.

If they mandate that all textbooks must be free, it can effect the quality of our education.

LSUS is sure active as of late with altering this program. Wonder what's their endgame and the timing of these changes?

Perhaps the program is getting too large for its britches?

Agreed Paul Allen. The recent textbook and pre-req changes worry me. As long as they stay AACSB
accredited...

For what its worth I had a chance to speak to LSU's partnerships executive director for LSUA and LSUS and she said the LSUS online program is almost identical to the brick and mortar LSU program at the home campus. And that was before all the proctoring changes. So that's encouraging...

Winchester & Paul, I agree. These changes give the feeling that they're trying to water it down a little. Let's hope they keep that accreditation.

I want our degrees to be respected.

Did anyone else get an invitation to join the The Society for Collegiate Leadership and Achievement? Is it worth joining this honor society and can stoles be worn at graduation?

I did. I suggest googling it. It's a for profit organization. I guess it might look good on a resume but LSUS doesn't acknowledge it at graduation.

I'd be curious to know if LSUS is using the open source textbooks as a selling point to new and potential students. More students = more money, and that's probably their endgame.

That's plausible, but at the same time the concern needs to be that of diluting the program. As others have mentioned, the AACSB accreditation has to remain for the program to be formidable and viable.

I hope so Paul... for all our sake. I assume keeping accreditation is still primary objective. I don't think any of us would've enrolled if they weren't.

I think is much farther down the priority list. Some of the classes are very big. I think some of the professors need to be redirected to make their classes more interactive and less dependent on stupid publisher websites. I think the dependence on poor online electronic content from publishers is where people probably feel they are getting taken regarding book cost. I don't think general textbook cost should be cut as a policy.

I know I would have not enrolled. If the program was not AACSB accredited I would now have even known that LSUS had a MBA program. Verbatim this was my google search when I decided to pursue my MBA, "Most affordable AACSB online MBA program"..... I would be willing to put it all on black that this is the same for 95% of the current enrolled students. I hope they realize that and if they decide not to maintain their accreditation it will be as if someone stole our milk money at school!

I couldn't agree more GSMBA16. I did the exact same google search. Although this is more of a personal goal of mine, I'd rather get my education from a school with the highest accreditation possible. Losing accreditation would have serious consequences for the program. Hoping the board is mindful of the changes they institute.
