Those who just finished ISDS 705 should be able to tell which of the 7 weeks had exams and you can work it out from there. Last fall may have been a different structure.

Anyone taken both FIN 720 and FIN 730? General thoughts? Which did you prefer?

I'm deciding whether to pair up 730 with ISDS 705 in Fall 2 or wait and pair up 720 with MKT 705 in Spring 2. Leaning toward the latter.

ETA: I see an old post that 9BREES9 did this, and he didn't like 720 with Hsieh at all. Any one else experience this?

AstroTiger if Vines is teaching 730, then take it for sure. Those who just finished ISDS 705 said it's the easiest course in the program... that seems like something I'd want to pair up.

I had Hsieh for 710 and he is tough but manageable.

Looks like 730 is scheduled for Choi this fall 2. Haven't heard much of anything about him.

Those of you who have had Vines for FINA 701, how should I prepare for his exams? Are his exams similar to the practice problems he lists in the reading guides? As of now, I am focusing on gathering all the formulas together for each chapter.

STUDY the reading guide front to back and back to front. Attend all of the live zoom sessions and ask questions. Learn the calculations but make sure you understand what you are doing because his qualitative questions can be difficult. Anyone can plug and chug in a finance course and get by and he understands that so he will ask questions in a way to make sure you understand them. I have taken 3 of the 4 finance classes and taking the 4th this next session. In order of difficulty so far they are FIN 701, FIN 710, and FIN 730. I don't know where FIN 720 will fall but will update after this next session. I spent the most time in preparation in the program with FIN 701 and ECON 705. Good Luck and don't wait until the last minute with Vines and wing it and expect good results. He has been the best teacher in this program by far but he does require effort on the students part.

The problems will follow the same format of the practice. GSMBA has some good advice on dealing with the qualitative questions. They are tougher than the problems imo.

I would also practice typing out and working the problems in Excel. So when you work a problem for the exam you can just copy and paste all your work into Moodle. If you just missed one step or just a math error, he'll see that you basically understand it and give you the majority of the credit.

MBAStudent,
I would also recommend showing as much work as you can on the exams. Unless you are certain your answer is correct I would work out any quantitative problems in full. On the final exam one problem stumped me to the point where I didn't even bother with a final set answer, i just had multiple lines of an equation showing what I thought I should do - he gave me 3 out of 5 for that questions which helped me squeak by with an A.

Socal,
We have the same schedule next term. 751 should be fairly easy but we may have to help each other along in ACCT 701 depending on how much it has been revamped.

I considered them all about the same. The main difference was Hsieh vs Vines. Hsieh only dropped a note packet and had 4 exams on moodle. I think all professors should have to have some type of interactive thing associated with their class like a personal video lecture. Vines did zoom meetings every week and posted the recordings. He was much more interactive. Hsieh would answer questions, but he didn't do much facilitating of the class and material.

The best professors in the program imo are Meeks (MADM), Vines (FIN), and Shaugnessy (ECON). They all provided interactive delivery methods through personal video lectures and zoom video conference meetings in their course. This is the way all the courses should be in the program. Too often some of the other professors have taken the route of online course materials from publishers instead of developing their own content (I do believe some of these professors are changing and moving in the right direction). The three top performing professors imo I mentioned also were much more focused on the high level thinking and content of the courses. I didn't see them overloading the course with assignments and exams/quizzes just to make the courses hard. It was actually about the material.

Just have the equations typed out with the variables defined in word. That way if they are needed for the question they are ready to go. The rest of it you should be able to just type in your own words suring the test.

Read his weekly write up over and over. Then make sure at minimum to read through the transcripts of the zoom video conferences and watch any recordings. Sometimes you can't make them all, but he was good posting the recordings and transcripts if you couldn't make it.

This past session ISDS 705 had test the Friday of the 7th week, the Thursday of the 5th week and Wednesday of the 3rd week, and I will agree with what was already said it was the easiest class in the course. Those of you looking at FIN Electives, anything Vines teaches will be good, I learned so much more in Vines class than in Hseih. And thats not just the bitterness talking about making a B in FIN 710 with him.

I'm curious Jeaux. Are they continuing with the BOS Simulation in MKT?

According to the syllabus, no. Grades will consist of:

Exams: 3 @ 75 points
Case Analyses: 4 @ 50 points
Discussion Forums: 10 @ 20 points

Doesn't seem too bad. Exams are proctored with Proctorio and are closed notes.

GSMBA16, sorry about not squeaking out an A. I had hopes to get a 4.0 as well. I got tripped up by FIN 701 with Vines. I was still confused on what he expected on his exams and only earned a 74% on the first exam. Did much better in the remaining exams but couldn't do enough to make it back up and finished with an 88% and a B.

Bottom line, we all know once we get this degree no one will ever ask what our grades were. Still, I like to do my best like you so understand your frustration.
