Should retirement plan be a major priority?

Yes, because you never know when "until I can't work anymore" will be. Health is not predictable.

Plan for the unexpected, and making some of your money work for you, instead of just working for your money, isn't a terrible idea regardless

I mean, I wouldn't plan on just spending every dime that came in from now until then.

You'd still be crazy not to save at least 10% into a retirement account because of the tax savings and wealth building. Pay off your house and love debt free.

Do you really want to be 60 and have a life crisis and not want to work without any savings? What if you have a stroke at 64 that requires a lifestyle change?

I'd like to work a little bit for a long time. It's either that or I need to get way more interesting/less lazy, because without work my days would be pretty boring.

Healthy today doesn't mean healthy tomorrow. You're just entering the demographic where major, life altering health issues come to the forefront. Being dead is cheap, staying alive gets expensive. Especially if you have no children, you need to have real plans for handling potential long term care.

And OP, I'm in your situation but I make sure to save as much as I can each year. When I get into the hospice I want the nurses changing my diapers to be OT 10's.

My dad was the same way.

Now he's pushing 60 and has a grandchild. He's getting tired and more selfish (not necessarily in a bad way).

He really wants to retire. Can't. Probably won't be able to for five more years if he wants to have a retirement that isn't on a shoestring budget.

Really depends on how much you make and need now and how much you think you'll need in retirement/when you cannot work anymore

Yes. You never know what life brings you. My mom was diagnosed with early onset Alzheimer's at age 54. Had to quit work and was in a nursing home by 59 (costs 5K a month).

No you are good.

Just kidding. You have no idea at age 40 when you will have to stop working, so you had best plan for it as soon as possible, which is yesterday.

I'm a criminal defense attorney. While I plan to cut back substantially one day, I see no reason why I wouldn't keep limited office hours and drag my old arse to court to every once and a while. I can't imagine that it would make me feel younger and stay sharper than fully retiring.

At a certain point you can't retire, because you will most certainly die within a few days of doing so.

I'd like to semi retire at 60 and then just do a few consulting jobs each year to maintain some tax write offs for expenses and some travel.

You're right about keeping busy doing something to stay sharp but hopefully I can do that volunteering for charities and several mission trips each year, at least that's how I'd like to keep myself busy outside of traveling.
