Graduated with about 15k in student loan debt, but had a good paying oilfield job and was living at parents' home for the first year and a half when I wasn't in the field. Paid off loans, then had about 75k in cash and 401k by the end of the first half of my 20's. Still enjoyed life, wasn't being particularly frugal
Ended up going to grad school, so savings stopped for a while, but back working now

I can say now that I wish I had more money by saving back then, but I sort of think that if you save anything from those years you've prolly done something wrong.
Granted that chunk of wisdom comes from someone who is practically still paying bills from being twenty something.

I wish I would've attacked my 401ks a little harder right out of college, but I was still getting after it pretty good. I don't regret it and things turned out just fine.
With that being said, it's one of the few times, for many, that your responsibilities are minimal and you can pretty much do what you want. I really don't believe that if I was able to put an extra 20k in to 401's that I'll be in a much different boat at 50.

On a side note... is spending so much on a wedding really worth it?
I realize that having a huge fairytale wedding is a status symbol in the South... but is it really better than just eloping somewhere?

My wife was great about fitting things inside our budget. Issue was that she wouldn't agree to the budget unless it accounted for best venue in the city, her preferred band, brand name wedding dress and "amazing flowers"
We spent a lot of money for other people to look at "pretty things" for a day.

Hell no but there is much to be said about keeping your wife happy. Hopefully you have one that isn't asinine about it and wants something somewhat moderately sized and not overdone.

I would simply make it my goal to fight the debt monster off. If you can keep debt low, then you will be set when the big paycheck starts to roll in. My brother is a pharmacist, makes good money but has student loan debt he has to service for a very long time.

I would happily elope. I don't actually think my dad would care and would say "congrats" but my mom would be sad.
