Sounds like someone chose the wrong career path.

Engineers in the O&G industry along the I-10 corridor from Houston to New Orleans definitely make that much.

..and it isn't via simple promotions, it's from the demand. You work at one place for 4 years and move onto another company for a 20%+ raise. You do it 2-3 times along with yearly 4-5% raises, at worst, and you go from $30/hr out of school to $65+/hr in less than 12 years.

Not bs at all. I worked at same company for 4 years, changed companies and got a 30% raise. It's still blows my mind they pay me what they do. I'm 28 and make 50 bucks an hour. Sometimes I have to pinch myself. Like someone else said, there just aren't a lot of EE's with experience in power. shite my dad is a senior electrical designer and Im not even close to what he makes and he doesn't even have a degree. But he also has 30 years of experience. And it's just getting worse with the work force. In ten years 50% of the work force will be retiring.

some Senior Lead Piping Designers are making $80+ per hour in Baton Rouge. These are 30+year guys, but still ridiculous.

In some cases BR rates are higher than Houston Rates.

O&G engineers can easily make over 100k after a few years. You will most likely move out of engineering and in to an operations role (high stress) to make that money, but if you have the degree, the oppurtunity is there. I make very, very close to 100k base salary after 3.5 years. With bonuses and stock options, I'll clear 120 this year. I'm not an EE, but we have EE's that start out in the same job I did. I moved out of engineering after 2 years and have nearly doubled my base salary from when I first started.

I work for a software company, and while we prefer comp sci, we also hire EEs. We generally pay right around $70k out of school, but only hire from top 50 schools.

These companies have a pension? 401k?

Engineering firms won't have pensions. 401k match yes. All are a little different. Current one I'm at does 100% for first 3% and 50% for next 2%. 100% vested immediately.

We have 401k. $1 for $1 match up to 5% of salary.

4 to 5 weeks of PTO

8 paid holidays.

They also pay short term and long term disability.

Ok I have 401k matching up to 5% and a pension. Can have up to 5 weeks of vacation after I put the time in. Pay is less but does the pension make up for it? 1.5 x years of service.

The pension thing is great, but I would not rely on it. Not sure that is accounts for inflation either. If you plan on staying there your full 30 year career then it may be worth it. If you plan on switching jobs sometime then the difference in pay now would be a better option in my opinion.

Mine does. I work for a top 3 Oil Major.

I'll break down my compensation package for you.

My base salary is $123600k. I have a bonus target of 15% annually. It's based on my performance and the company performance. I've had it as low as 8% and as high a 26%. I get 300 shares of preferred stock annually.

I get 4 weeks of vacation based on my years experience, not my time with the company. Will go to 5 with 20 years experience and 6 at 30.

I have a 401K that in year 2-5 of employment is funded with 2.5% of my salary regardless of my contributions. Years 5-9 is 5%. Year 10 and beyond is 10%.

I also have a pension that is based on a point scale. My points equate to my age plus years of service. At 80 points, I've bypassed the point of deductions in my pension, however, there is a sticking point that for every year before I'm 59.5 they deduct 5% of my pension. My pension is an annuity. It's 60% of the average of my final 3 years salary.

Once past 30 years of service I retain my medical benefits.

I have several friends that work for other oil majors and all our packages are relatively similar with relatively similar pay scales.

With time, you could easily get to $175k with a 20% bonus target and 600 shares of stock. To progress past that point you'll need to move into a management role.

Highest paid engineer in the world

I'm not EE but work with them in Petrochem. Can someone confirm the general classification at my work that EE is the most volatile of the engineering disciplines? It seems to have high contractor and turnover rates compared to the others. Why is that?
