Ok, keep the finance side of this aside for a sec; After 10 years of going to Disney multiple times a year, not once did you think: "Man I wish we could do something different this time" ? I find that very very hard to believe. And if that is true, I am not sure how many people would think like you.

I factored that into my calculations, but I did use staying in a deluxe resort every time because that's what we do. This is how I came down to break even being somewhere in the 28 year range on one and 41 on the other.
Do you pay for an upgraded room for all your vacations? If so - you are right to consider that as money saved. If you are staying in an upgraded room just to break even with the cost of the points, then you cannot call the points worth it just because you are staying in an upgraded room.

Done that plenty of times. IMO, Epcot resorts cant be beat.

If you factor in renting points, discounts, then add in your yearly assesment, taxes, etc. it takes much longer than 3 years to pay out.
I was referring to the base price. 3 years for original purchase price versus what it would have cost us in that same timeframe based on going rates then. yeah, sure a few years longer after that if you include taxes and extras without a doubt. Great deal regardless.

We usually end up in Epcot
yup. rose and crown pub or tutto gusto or ragland road for us plenty nights. Absolute blast.

That is something for OP to consider then because he may not.

Me too, but I'd also rather be staying for free on points right across the pond at the Sheraton Swan.

Define upgraded? paying extra? or using the points/contracts i've paid off to use as i see fit? I don't pay a dime for any of my villas anymore other than annual maintenance costs which was already mentioned here but we've use 1 bedroom and two bedrooms most the time in the villas. Have not stayed in a grand villa yet though.

Anything over the cheapest room available

and............that was the first contract(which is why i said original purchase price) not what we added on later just for clarification.
It's a great vacation property and we love it. Definitely never meant to be used as an investment property that's for damn sure.
Only for personal fun!
It's not for everybody obviously for reasons stated earlier. If you don't go often or have a family then stay off property if you do not mind driving, then pay to park or catch a cab or maybe the hotel may have a concierge bus service. I like being close and not driving. Or if the disney points seem to high now don't buy. to each his own. I'm just glad we got in when we did.

Haha you really love Disney don't you? I'm glad you enjoy it and really the most important part "personal fun" cannot really be assigned a dollar value. Good on you

yes, based on points usage required in that season for that amount of time we stayed. cheapest would be a studio. we did stay in a studio ONE TIME. Every other time it was a bigger villa.

those are not in disney property either. You can't use the disney buses to get there either. This is assuming you drove there and then drive to the parks. Then you have to pay for parking. I'd rather be staying at BWV right around the corner from EPCOT and close to Disney's hollywood studios with a short walk or boat ride and no driving. Then use their buses to get to other parks and places. We can close down the rose and crown pub or tutto gusto or raglan road with no worries of having to drive.
It's definitely been more than worth it for us. We have went twice a year several times and 3 times a year once.
Both bus to Animal Kingdom and Magic Kingdom, where our family spends most of their time. We can bus from AK or MK to Studios or Monorail to Epcot in minutes.
We've stayed on property, rented points and stayed off property using Costco Travel. We've done dining plan and no dining plan. There are people that will argue with me, but I prefer staying in a nicer non-Disney hotel.

I own at Bay Lake and Saratoga. It's worth it for us.

We have 150 points and for us it is worth it. Like someone said, it's not worth it if you like the value resorts. I am a spoiled traveler through work. My stays at moderate resorts for races before DVC were not great. It is also nice having a full kitchen in your room (non-studios), a washer and dryer, the location of most of the resorts. Renting points is an option, but so is renting back your points after you get them.
I have heard the "why wouldn't you want to go somewhere else" or "wouldn't you get tired of it". First, I think most people that have the cash to lay out for stuff like this are not the 2 weeks of vacation type. I take plenty of vacations elsewhere too. Second, you don't buy it if you don't like Disney to begin with. Personally, I could go and just skip the parks entirely sometimes.
I stayed at the bonnet creek waldorf for one visit, even with the shuttle service they had, it was way less convenient and that hotel is next to the all star resort. I am not going if I have to say off property. Too much hassle. One time my wife wanted to drive from AKL to MK because she thought it would be faster. Terrible decision.
Good luck in your decision.

Not true. Owning a timeshare is not that out of reach. Secondly, people in the United States are limited on vacation time. Which is the biggest barrier to multiple large trips in a year. Not the money.
My point is you are better of going to Disney and staying at a nice resort than owning a TS. I like to Ski and like to go every year. For about 15 minutes I "thought" of the TS option, but quickly and easily realized how I was better off paying cash every time I went.
Anyway, if you think it makes sense for you - I am sure you have thought it through at a personal level.

I don't think timeshares are necessarily out of reach, just with better jobs come more vacation time or job flexibility, in general. I would say the majority of folks that own DVC are the type that would go often and have more than 2 weeks vacation. I would question timeshare ownership overall if you only had 10-14 days vacation, unless you had no family or other obligations to absorb that time.

The problem is that if you don't use your points one year, it throws any 'value' out the window. It's a great deal of you are older with 1 kid and limited other family that goes with you so you need the same thing year after year. But the savings you get IMO are not worth the extra hassle of trying to figure out the system anytime you need something different, need more, or need less points.

we've looked into it several times but have not pulled the trigger. Here are some thoughts I have on it.
1) Like many things Disney World, the price seems to be escalating at a higher rate than my perceived value. I'm very jealous of Fat Bastard being a member since 1998 (I was still in high school, LOL). Prices were much, much more reasonable back then, so I can see where he's gotten an insane amount of value out of it. Now the resale price is $85 and 10-15 years ago, that was the "new" price. The new prices in the $150 and up range seem very high to me.
2) We've never stayed at anything more than a moderate, and that's without kids... with the kids we always stay in a value. We spend pretty much rope drop to fireworks in a park every single day, so we are basically in the resort hotels to sleep. We stay on property because of the convenience but I see no need to pay more for a higher level resort when I can't get any real use out of it.
Said another way, if you are comparing DVC to value resorts you will never make it work financially.
3) You absolutely have to pay cash for the points. If you finance it, it makes the payback period that much longer.
4) You don't actually get it forever... there is an expiration date on the points. That is one of the reasons for the decline in value of the points and why resales are cheaper.
If I were to ever buy points - and we may in the future - we would buy at least 150 at resale and pay cash, and it will only be when the kids are old enough to appreciate a nicer resort (or they are all grown!)

You can bank and borrow points so you can basically use three years's worth of points at a time if you schedule it right.
