re: Credit Card Rewards and Points Discussion

I understand where you're coming from, but I think it's short sighted. Because of transfers, UR points are generally valued at just over 2 cents per point. Does it sometimes make sense to just use the portal? Sure. But it's usually better to do a transfer.
Also, your rendition doesn't take into account the fact that one needs at least one premium Chase card in order to use transfer partners. My Ink Plus used to be my permanent hold, but I've moved to the CSR. By doing so, every point I earn with no fee Freedom, Freedom Unlimited, and Ink Cash are now worth north of two cents as well when I transfer their points to my CSR before using them.
In short, the only way your math comes close to working is if one is going to eschew using UR transfer partners generally, which I think would be condemned as folly by pretty much anyone engaged in the card game.

I'll just delete and keep working on it.
OK. Here's what I have, maybe someone can explain it. I know it has something to do with United's routing rules/multicity changes I just can't pinpoint why.
JNB-whatever-America = 80k Business class
DAR-ZRH-JFK=80k
JNB-DAR-ZRH-JFK=125k (longest connection is under 6 hours in DAR. I have to force this one using Multi-city, which might be the problem itself. Perhaps its because JNB-DAR is economy class?
Looks like its using multi city that does it, because when I do that DAR-ZRH-JFK prices out at 125k instead of 80k. Going to have to figure out to force the JNB segment on somehow (hopefully).
ETA: WTF I hate United's computer
Doesn't see the Biz class seat JNB to DAR on the ZRH-JFK itinerary. HOWEVER
It perfectly sees it when the itinerary is JNB-DAR-ZRH-MIA(80k) BOooo, but I may book this.
ETA2: On the phone explaining to them how this makes zero sense.
ETA3: It appears I have them convinced to let me book JNB-DAR-ZRH-JFK.
ETA4: Done and done, and as of now they didn't take the 80,000 miles I owe them for the change from Econ to Biz. If that sticks that's pretty sweet

The only time I could possibly see this as true is if you fly delta frequently and want their lounge access. Otherwise their card isn't that good

Most points cards are overrated, unless you redeem the points for international travel.

lol cool. Just my opinion.
There is information out there that will let you know what an airline point is worth. If club access is a big deal to you, then there will be more value there. But for most people who just want to get from point A to point B as cheaply as possible, then I think there are better options... again, unless you use points to travel internationally. There is still solid value when redeeming for international travel.

Whether points are a good value for domestic travel is almost always predicated on whether the person lives in a city with an airline hub. If you need a connection, you probably aren't going to get very good value.
Which is why I generally pay for my flights and use points for hotels.

Well, I've called both South African and SWISS and picked our seat assignments in biz class so we'll see.

how long should I wait before applying for CSR? I've had the Quicksilver (1st card) for 3 months (2k limit). I've spent almost $10k on it and I haven't even gotten my 3rd statement yet, so it's a pain in the arse constantly making payments and making sure im at 30% before the pay period ends. paying off every month
ive seen some people saying at least a year of history, but that would suck. May ask Cap1 for a credit increase based on my spending based on what yall say

If you need to get into the Chase country club your chance of success is probably higher if you apply for Freedom, wait a couple months, then go for their premium cards. It sucks since you are using up 5/24 on a low bonus card, but that's the only way I really know to "speed things up."

Hmmmm
Trying to decide if my wife should get 60,000 Southwest miles or 70,000 United miles. Deal ends 7/31 for United and she's eligible for the bonus again about 2 weeks before that SW ends in 5 days but 50,000 is pretty normal.
I've become a fan of the extra award seats the United card opens up, makes it borderline a keeper for me now. Flip side is we always have a million weddings a year SW would be good for.
She's at 4/24 and another slot opens up in October. I'm leaning United because that's 20k higher than usual....

I applied for the United since it's been over two years and apparently I'm at 5/24 because I'm an AU on one of my wife's account. Chase pisses me off with this rule and they count AU for some stupid reason

If it's only one AU they will disregard it. Call back and play dumb "why did you not approve me?" They will say too many accounts, you can say how many? I've only opened a few. And say I'm an AU on my wife's card opened such and such date, is that a problem? Then they'll disregard.
And ya it's annoying, I had to go through all of our accounts and remove AU status off a bunch.

any reason my wife should NOT to the 100,000 point signup bonus with amex? we are new to the CC game, but thanks to you guys we both did the CSR 100,000 signup (before the year ended so we got the $300 travel credit for '16 and '17). We were going to cancel her card and add her to mine, but now I am wondering if we should go with amex for her instead. she threw away the offer (doh) but I was going to see if she qualified online. If so, what do you all think?
