Quick question for all you AA experts.

I booked a flight to Amsterdam in Mid-May using my AA points. Currently I have this flight booked:
DFW>LHR>Amsterdam.

It ended up costing me around $320 in taxes/fuel surcharges after using my points bc I'm flying British airways and landing in London.

I found a direct flight to Frankfurt at a similar time departing from DFW which does not have any taxe/fuel surcharges. I was thinking of trying to change my flight and then just catch a separate flight from Frankfurt to Amsterdam.

My question is... If I change my flight is there any fees I will be charged and can I get a full refund for the taxes and other fees I've already paid for for my initial flight?

Yes, there are fees. I believe the AA fee is $150 but I could be mistaken. Honestly, that fuel surcharge isn't bad. We fly through LHR in business class on BA and our surcharge is usually around $450 a ticket.

Everything will be refunded to you for a $150 fee (to redeposit your miles) if you change your destination or origin, unless you have Executive Plat status with AA. Then it is free. You can change flights and dates at will as (at least a week out) for free.

AA flies a daily PHL > AMS flight if you can find an award on that. Then you can just add a DFW to PHL leg (which will be free), to make your change completely free and get rid of fuel surcharge.

Another way would be to find connecting flights from other airports. Like for example if you can find an award on a leg from FRA > AMS - that will make your change free too. Other good options to route through are HEL, CPH, MAD, Paris Orly (ORY).

For you currently the idea is to find an overwater flight to Europe that has no fuel surcharge. And then piece together the domestic legs - which are free when using AA miles.

I avoid BA and LHR like the plague. Finnair and Air Berlin are a couple favorites.

All "awards" need to be SAAver awards. Search for Finnair on AA. Air Berlin on Qantas. Not sure if BA shows AB.

Alrighty sounds like I'm better off just keeping my original flight.

I just checked the PHL flights to Amsterdam for the award level I booked and they all stop in LHR :( Thanks for the info

I've looked a good bit over the last few weeks. It only cost me 20k AA points to get over there and my dates/times aren't very flexible at this point.

But I'll keep on the look out for the PHL>AMS flight. Thanks again

Know nothing about Whitney points. Usually these bank points at least = 1 cpp. And see if buying merchant GCs will yield any better value than that.

In general - you want to stick with Chase, Citi and AmEx for the most part for travel rewards as imo they have some of the top products in the business.

Btw - speaking of Whitney, they have an offer going where if you open a checking account + 1 direct deposit + 5 debit card uses = $200 Visa GC in the mail. Was perfect timing for me since I need a couple more checking accounts for MO deposits so scooped another $200 on the way

Were you targeted for the Whitney Bank offer and did you apply over the phone?

I am fairly certain it is not targeted due to the nature of the letter that I had received since it had noones name on it. I have roommates so it couldn't have been targeted unless there was a name on it.

That said, I just completed the requirements so not absolutely certain until I actually receive the GC. I opened my account in branch with the actual letter that I received and the reps there showed every sign that I would be getting the offer including verbal confirmation.

The "letter" addressed noone. It was just a flyer with the offer details on it. I am sure if you could get your hands on one of those and brought it in, they would let you get it. But again, it had no code on it or anything, so maybe just go in and tell them you lost the flyer that you had received.

I'll give it a try but that makes sense. I heard the "targeted mailing" was based on address. For instance, if I called in they would look up by my address. You had an actual invitation and did it in branch so I'm sure that helped.

Just got my first 5 emails today from that IHG contest where you could mail in entries. I sent in 50. Got 500 points per entry so far so that was an easy 2,500 IHG points.

Can I downgrade the Ink Plus to the Ink Cash next year after I've gotten my annual bonus for 5x and 2x and still spend the points the same? I'm thinking I would call and see if they waive the AF, but I don't get that they will so I figure just go to the Ink Cash and avoid an AF altogether. Just want to make sure I can still use the UR points I have already accumulated though at the same rate. They still go 1:1 to the airlines and spend at a higher rate through the UR portal for hotels?

Not unless you have a sapphire. THere's People who would kill to be in your position and have an Ink and you're talking about dropping it

You only need to spend ~$2,400 on Office supply stores to offset the fee even if you valued points at 1 cpp. Much less if you use them on partners and at a higher valuation.

Yeah, with the gas trick that should be really easy. And I already spend about $4k+ a year on phone and internet/cable anyway.

Ok, I'm getting it. SPG biz will come after I do the $5k spend on Ink +.

CC Gurus....I have Sapphire and will be hitting the 4k mark this month to get the 50k point bonus. Is Sapphire worth keeping once the annual fee starts? I keep my Marriott and IHG cards since they give a free night which usually cancels out the fee.

ETA: I'm thinking the Citi Double Cash is the way to go since its damn near impossible for me to get a 2% value on miles/points while not traveling internationally.

You'd have to transfer those points out to Marriott, IHG, etc before cancelling or you lose them unless you have an ink. Also due to 5/24, you may not get it again.

I have no intention to cancel anytime soon, too many perks like the primary rental car insurance, travel insurance. So easy to ear points and transfer to Hyatt or southwest. I don't have any legit business right now to get the ink.
