I think paying +140k of debts in 5 years would be an extraordinary accomplishment.

I would however focus my down debt if I were you. Let her take care of her own. You're not married yet so the financials should be combine. You can learn about each other's spending/saving habits but keep the finance separate.

Make sure that you both take stipends for housing and find it on your own rather then have them provide the housing for you.

As far as I understand it Louisiana is a community property state where the debt is considered equal...however in our case that won't apply since the debt was incurred before the marriage.

Med school is about the only thing worth taking on $100,000+ of loans for. I hope that is what you got

I would think something like pharmacy would be worth it, too. Finish when you're 24, make 110k+, if you're frugal you can pay off your debt in 5 years or so. 29 years old making probably 120k by then with no debt would be a pretty good deal.

OP is in a great position. Between a PT and RN they. Be making about 130k and will have no housing expenses.

130k means they will net around 80k and can easily live on 30k annually and put 50k a year towards debt.

Seems like a lot in the short term but totally reasonable and manageable over the long term. Should be debt free in the next five years if no kids.

Thanks lynx. We definitely are going to use it to our best advantage and consider it an adventure along the way.

+1

Let's see... both doing travel jobs and most likely living in different cities and not seeing each other for weeks/months. Being a newb nurse, she'll often hate her job too. It's a high stress profession.

My suggestion is move to Houston/Dallas wheres theres a huge abundance of jobs in the medical field and settle down.

I think he meant they're traveling together.

OP don't listen to everyone in here trying to scare you. I'm a PT and came out with about 70k in loans and paid majority of it off in 5 years on one income just before kids came. Have about 15k left that would be paid but just had our first baby so we are saving some and using it for other things. You guys will be fine.

LSU is over $100k now for PT school when you factor in living expenses.

This same board told me I had to quit my job a follow my wife to FL for grad school instead of keeping my job in BR and living apart for 2.5 years...otherwise it would never work out.

Well, they were wrong.

at people saying their debt will be tough to pay off. They'll be making great money combined. If they live frugally they can knock out those loans in no time

We will be traveling together not separately and she is not a new nurse. With a combined 130-150k a year I think we'll be fine since we won't have to pay for housing/insurance/etc. we are already used to living frugally for school so we can hopefully knock it out relatively quickly.

True, it's just unfortunate to have to put your life on hold for a few years.

I know many people who are in 100k+ debt studying in a field where the average pay is ~70k. I don't think I could do that.
