Most of those states don't have state income tax I would think. I just feel that for what you get South LA is a very expensive place to live. Hell Houma now has a 10.5% sales tax.

If you are making minimum wage you should not be living in an apartment by yourself

Only 9 states don't have a state income tax with Florida, Tennessee and Texas being the only three "southern" states.

Louisiana tax rates aren't crazy high despite what some people claim.

Are there even private schools in Louisiana? I know of one. There's a ton of low budget religious schools (known as parochial schools), but let's not confuse them with private schools across the country that fetch double or triple the prices of parochial schools (cheap private schools at least).

Clearly you have no idea of the private school situation in South Louisiana.

Baton Rouge has Catholic High, St. Joseph's, Episcopal, Dunham, and St. Michael's that are all right around or over 10k a year for one child to attend. If you don't want your kid to be subject to the race war that is BR public schools then you are going to Shell out 4-5k for k-8 and another 10-12k for 9-12.

That's easily 80k for one child to get a good education in BR. How my parents put 3 kids through private school on a sub 100k household income is a damn miracle to me.

He was saying that since those schools have a religious affiliation he doesn't count them as true "private" schools.

Louisiana also has private schools without a religious affiliation though, so it was an ignorant comment all around.

$10k is extremely cheap for a private high school education relative to other places. I think that was more or less what he was describing.

As an example, Dallas had some amazing private schools: St Marks, ESD, Greenhill, Hockaday, etc. but these places are more like $30-40k a year.

In general parochial schools around the country have been shrinking in numbers. Mostly because of the focus on religious education rather than math and science, but also because of the lower standards in teacher qualification and student expectation. I realize that isn't the case in Louisiana, but to compare paroachial school with private schools is silly. A decent private school in NJ is about $25k per year before boarding. Now if you want to send your kids to St. Wefondlechilds it's about 3x less.
I know people who went to both private and public schools in LA. As one poster alluded to the major difference between the two entities was the number of minorities students in one encounter compared to the other.

My point is I don't get the argument that people feel Louisiana is expensive because they chose to over pay for a religious education that is mostly below standards. To call that St. Mostlywhitekids a private school is like calling a Kia a Rolls Royce

You are downplaying the quality of education at a place like CHS and SJA. Those schools are really top notch establishments.

And Jesuit, Sacred Heart, Mount Carmel, Episcopal, etc.
That guy is making a pretty big generalization because of the religious aspect I guess

If you factor in the cost of two children's private tuition

The question was about whether you could afford to live in LA, not whether you can afford to pay for private tuition on top of that.

I know TD loves to hate Shreveport, but housing is cheap and there is an excellent public school track you can take k-12.

Compare it to Northern Virginia and get back to me. Your private schools are a bargain compared to here and everything else is much more expensive here.

and on top of that we have horrible insurance rates for wind/hail and flood

You do realize that "flood," insurance is typically subsidized incredibly heavily to begin with and that the FedGov offers it as a last resort. It's not exactly something that differs from state to state or urban area to urban area. It differs based on the topography and elevation of where you live.

If you live in a flood prone area with little elevation within a floodway or special flood hazard area, you are going to pay more. That has nothing to do with insurance companies.

My takeaway from the article and this data is that I'm dubious of the housing costs. I find it hard to believe a single person in multiple Parishes listed pays the same average housing costs as a single person in Orleans Parish proper.

$646 is a very strange number and I'd like to see the data they used to crunch this figure out.

Have you seen any of the flipping shows?

A 3 br, 1 bath, 1200 sqft, 50 year old home that needs 100K+ in renovations sells for 420K in California.

There are less than 15 houses for sale in Franklin or Brentwood for under $300k. If you then send your kids to private school, tuition is easily $20k. Davidson County in the areas you want to live in Nashville is the same as Franklin or Brentwood but you definitey have to send your kids to private school. We pay $12.5k per kid for daycare/preschool right now.
