Louisiana is still relatively cheap compared to much of the country. If you can't cut it there you'll have a hard time in most places.

I truly believe this is a myth.

If you factor in the cost of two children's private tuition ($8,000/yr X 12 years) plus the most expensive auto insurance in the nation (25% higher than the next most expensive state...thanks awful roads and litigators), you are spending well over an extra $200,000 by the time your kids graduate high school compared to other states.

You're right, but even with private school and stupid high auto insurance it is still MUCH cheaper than California or New York and probably somewhat cheaper than Chicago.

Yeah but the property taxes are extremely low, which makes up the difference for the private school tuition.

Plus, that article is talking about the bare minimum amount a family needs to survive on their own. That type of family isn't sending their kids to private schools. It's a luxury, not a necessity.

True.
But, those are extremes.
I'd easily put raising a family in LA is one of the top 25 most expensive states.

It really depends on where you live. In New Orleans, yes. It's much more expensive than most of these types of studies show. The cost of a house in New Orleans total is something like 200k, but if you look in actual safe neighborhoods where people live the price is roughly 500k. And on top of that, you have to send your kids to private school, which is also not typically factored in.

It's a different story in rural Louisiana, though. I grew up in Vermilion parish and went to a decent public school. Cost of living is much cheaper in those types of areas.

That being said, this article is just referring to the bare minimum, not private school/decent neighborhood crowd.

Nah my property tax would have to be stupid high to make up the difference. It is very expensive to live in most of LA. In the Houma area the oilfield has inflated the housing market. Our public schools aren't great so I pay private school tuition and on top of that we have horrible insurance rates for wind/hail and flood. I am looking at right around $20k / yr before any regular bills. I have everything paid off and it is still close to $50k / year in after tax dollars to live down here.

Louisiana is the only state that has "affordable" daycare cost based on median wages. We were paying $1,100 a month for two kids in Louisiana and when we moved to Kansas late last year that went up to $1,650 a month.

Auto Insurance was cut in half and property tax tripled. Public schools are great in Kansas though.

This trend is happening in major cities all across the south as the trend right now for young people is to move these areas. New Orleans, Atlanta, Dallas, Nashville, and many others have all exploded in the last 5 years and COL has risen quickly because of this.

Your choice. You can live in an area with good schools. Has nothing to do with COL.

The average is Louisiana is about half the average from around the country - so you could be saving a couple thousand there depending on where you live.

A lot of people do and it's unfortunate that public schools aren't a viable option. I don't see this changing anytime soon.

It's also greatly inflated salaries in the area. A lot of places would kill for 6 figure job opportunities without requiring a college/professional degree. You have to take the good with the bad.

Yikes, Private school tuition can be a killer.

Top 2 expenses for any households are:

1. Housing
2. Transportation costs

Housing in decent areas of Louisiana isn't cheap and auto insurance rates are sky high along with shoddy infrastructure which doesn't help wear and tear.

So, I agree. It's not a cheap place to live.

we also have to mention sales taxes which I think we are the highest in the nation now, which is ridiculous.

Why is this even being debated? There are COL calculators all over the internet that can easily provide the data to prove this one way or another.

Those calculators don't take into account many factors that I included in my previous post. You can't just look at New Orleans as a whole and say "look houses are only 200k, that's super cheap".

More functional parts of the country have competitive public schools. Not so in much of Louisiana.

According to CNBC, LA is the 14th cheapest state to live in

LINK

I think it's fairly obvious that the south is generally a cheaper area to live than other parts of the country. Obviously there is a premium for the bigger cities, but that exist everywhere.

Are there even private schools in Louisiana? I know of one. There's a ton of low budget religious schools (known as parochial schools), but let's not confuse them with private schools across the country that fetch double or triple the prices of parochial schools (cheap private schools at least).
Louisiana is by far the cheapest place I've ever lived. Check out property taxes in other states. I know people who pay $12-$25k on property taxes yearly.

This actually does exist and I don't think a lot of people in Louisiana realize it.
