bayoudude, I transferred all of my money from Edward Jones to Vanguard about 2 weeks ago. Set up an automatic withdrawl every month and forgot about it. I invested in VTSMX. Wish I would have went to vanguard along time ago seeing how much I was paying EJ. Basically like austiger said, send them a check, set up an acct, pick what you want to invest in. Basically it.

Well, are you looking to set up a Roth account or just an investment account? Many of the Vanguard funds have minimums at $5,000 or $10,000 and up, so if you start a Roth or two for you and the wife you will have a couple years of max contributions before you have enough money to buy into some of the funds.

What on earth are you talking about?

The vast majority of funds require 3k to start. The main exceptions are the sector based funds, and you typically have ETF alternatives to choose from.

Are you treating the admiral share class as their own fund or something?

I'm with Vanguard and I'm currently putting everything in VTSMX.

You can trade ETF's at their current price throughout the day like a stock. When you buy or sell an index fund it is at the closing price.

Any thoughts on VIIIX

Couldn't find it in the link listed earlier in the thread, but it's currently receiving 50% of my contributions (just started contributing 2 months ago).

Btw this is through a T. Rowe Price account that my current employer setup.. Don't see much TRP love but hey they match my contributions(6%).

Also in T3T... Should I dump it and pump everything into VIIIX? I'm 24 so I figured I can take risk by allocating all of my retirement funds in stocks for the time being.. Sorry for hijacking

You still want diversification into asset classes IMO.

I would put some (~8%) in a form of bonds and ~20% in non mortgage REITs.

Are the dividends from VDIGX automatically reinvested or are you prompted to do something?

cant go wrong with
low cost >> index funds
broad market basis >> total stock market
some bonds >> total bond market
or both >> balanced index fund
higher bond percent >> wellesley

Does VG have any brick and mortar branches? I'd like to sit down face to face and speak to someone about getting something started with them, but all I can find is online stuff. I'm such a novice about this stuff that I would prefer to actually sit down with someone and talk in person.

no

if you want F2F, find a Dimensional Funds or Schwab advisor. you'll pay more in fees but their offerings are the closest thing to Vanguard w/ F2F support

well that kinda sucks. VG is so highly regarded on here and I would like to get something started with them, but even with me doing my research online, like I said I'm such a novice I'd be more comfortable talking to someone and laying out exactly what my financial situation is, my income, what I want to put away, my goals, etc. and them basically say "ok, you need to do x,y, and z". done.

I highly recommend Bogleheads.org for your situation. They have several great boards, one of which is Help with Personal Investments.

Help with Personal Investments

There is a sticky at the top that describes the info you need to include in your post, so follow that. You will get a lot of good advice along the lines you are seeking, from a ton of knowledgeable folks who will put a surprising amount of time into answering your questions.

You can also learn a ton just by looking through the threads. Good luck.

VTSMX/VTSAX

Are these two the same fund? When I compare Vanguard funds on their site, I can't find VTSMX - only VTSAX. I can only find VTSMX by googling it.

Just curious.
