Oof, $50k for a backyard pool? Makes me feel better about my $60/mo HOA dues, which include a pool way larger and nicer than the usual backyard models.

He's not in "debt" Its on an asset that is worth way more than that.

My vote is convince your neighbor to get a pool

Hes still in debt. You can slice it anyway you want to when you owe money to a person, a bank, or whoever you are in debt. Now a mortgage is a good debt no doubt.

Just do like I do, buy a good no kink waterhose and turn the valve on while kids run through it. Sit in chair with a pack of Doral lights and cheap beer and watch the fun. Sadly, with the exception of smoking, since I quit, this really is what we do.

La Capitol FCU, at one time, offered an unsecured loan at 5.9 %. Yes, unsecured. Dollar amount up to $40K. Maybe even higher. How do I know?

If you default, let them come and get the pool.

Not necessarily. $40K may be more like it. I built over 650 sq. ft. pool with beach entry, gunite, heater, LED lights that change colors, water fountains, bubblers and iPad | iPhone functionality for $45K.

A smaller pool (than mine) can be done in the high 30's to low 40's.

Get a professional (landscape architect) to design your pool plans (well worth the additional cost). If you want to later incorporate an outdoor kitchen, have this in mind when laying it out.

And finally, negotiate people.

Get a sheet of Visqueen and a bottle of Dawn and your kids will think you're a genius. Also, it is $49,975 cheaper than a pool.

Does this mean you can bring you iPad/iPhone into the pool with you?

JK - but really... what does it mean?

I can control (or my wife) the bubblers, water fountains, heater, lights and salt content (check status) from the touch of my phone or iPad.

Eliminates me from having to get up and do it manually from the box. Yes, we are lazy, but having a pool is one of the selling points to ensure laziness follows.

pay cash for that. If you can't pay cash for something like that you should really hold off until you can.

nice looking setup. would've guess more than 45k for that. What are the brick boxes on either side of the pool? Planters?

We "need" a pool!

I'd buy a house with a pool already in unless you just love your property and dead set on staying put for >10 years.

Check out LA Capital and Neighbors FCU if in BR area.

I like my property and thought pretty hard about putting in a pool, but just couldn't justify the costs...So we're moving in the next couple of years or building to have a pool.

will - what area are you located? I have received estimates from 3 contractors for a setup similar, maybe bigger pool but all 3 bids were 75k plus. I am in BR.

We belong to a local swim club. Membership is $400/yr for our family and it's open from May - September. All of the kids friends also have families that below, and if we want to bring a guest, it's $5/day. We can bring our own food and drink including alcohol and they have grills. And they have lifeguards. And they do parties.

For $2,500 per year, for 20 years, I can join and bring $2,100 in guests, which is 420 guest days. There is no way I would use that many in a year. I have no maintenance, no chemicals, no repairs, etc. Yes, dues may increase from time to time, but the inflation rate of dues is certainly less than the upkeep costs of a built-in pool. Not to mention, if you have to finance the pool, it's even more costly.

The only way I could see ever having a built in pool would be if I bought a house that had one already in, and there was a very small or no addition to the cost of the house. Those things have hardly any value.

For 5K in cash you could probably have an amazingly nice above ground pool. There is always the option of sinking a pool, not sure how much those cost.

Planter boxes. About to be landscaped. And will host an outdoor speaker in each as well.

Ascension Parish.

If you would like the name of a couple of contractors that I considered, feel free to email me.
