Mickey was physically pushed around most of the game. In the second half he finally started trying to go around Towns and Carley-Stein instead of through them. Though the Kentucky bigs were still pushing him around on offense. He still needs to put on some more meat if he doesn't want to get pushed around at the next level.

Unless they have a monster NCAA tournament (we have to make it first) then I'm expecting both to be back

Neither ones draft stock is high enough to warrant leaving early IMO

They both aren't ready. After this season, neither will sniff the first round yet.

Martin also looked out of shape compared to their players.

Which one of their bigs plays 38 minutes a game?

NBA drafts on potential. So they are both not ready and we all know that but they are both gone. One or maybe 2 in college is what it is if you have any kind of talent.

According to this morning's paper, there were 48 NBA scouts in attendance last nite. Obviously, most to see UK's studs, but they had to come away impressed with M&:M's play. And just stop & think when was the last time common sense came into play as far as a player going pro or not.Nowadays, both can go to Europe, make good money & develop their games for the NBA level required.

Half of those UK bigs aren't freshmen.

Correct. The two best are a junior and sophomore. The two freshmen are very good as well, especially Townes. They have all been taught the fine art of leverage rebounding; jumping from behind an opponent and leveraging yourself up while pinning your opponent to the floor with a big hand across the shoulder. They got away with it all night as they normally do. It's a subtle move and difficult to see in realtime. I was taught the same thing many years ago. Unfortunately I haven't seen the Tigers make use of the tactic.

Tyrus' body was NBA-ready; Mickey's body is not NBA-ready. Thomas was physically able to play defense in the NBA; Mickey is not anywhere near ready to defend NBA 4's or 3's. He probably is ready to defend NBADL 4's.

What in the hell are you talking about? Thomas was listed at 6'9" 215lb his final year at LSU. Mickey is listed at 6'8" 235lb. Thomas was relatively thin at LSU. He, like Mickey, just had outstanding timing when it came to blocking shots. The only difference between the two is that Mickey is really probably 2 inches shorter than Thomas. His offensive game though is more refined that Thomas'

If the only knock on Mickey is that he is too short, then how is coming back to LSU for another year going to fix that? He may not be a first round lock, but his stock isn't going to improve much more with another year of college.

Martin is a different story. He's got the NBA size, but is a long way from being a solid NBA basketball player. Unless he is just desperate to leave, I think there is a decent chance that he comes back.

Mickey =/= Tyrus Thomas; Tyrus was taller, longer, and more explosive.

More accurate comparison might be Mickey to Vernel Singleton. I'd say Singleton had more hops, maybe a little better midrange jumper by the end; Mickey is a hair taller and has a bit better anticipation with blocks (have to remember Vernel played the post his freshman year, then moved out to make room for Shaq and Stanley).

Martin looks a bit like a poorly motivated Stromile with no defensive presence.

alternatively, he might work on his game facing the basket. You know, to hone the skills he'd need to play at his size. If he's looking at playing the 3, then being able to handle the ball some, hit some jumpers, etc- that would make him a lot more valuable.

Tyrus Thomas had what a 5 or 6 year run in the NBA just on shot blocking alone, at least Mickey has range, plus is a better shot blocker than Tyrus...

And leaving early ruined Tyrus Thomas' career. His talent was wasted because NBA coaches have little patience for actually coaching and developing talent and Tyrus was a raw talent same thing with Stromile

Keltictiger has a point, if the NBA was their only chance to make money, they might stay. However, both can make better money in Europe for their skill levels and see the world as well. I think Martin has the higher ceiling, even though Mickey is a better college player.

I would love to see them both come back and would be happy with one.

They gone.....:( And it's a shame, because this team could win championships next year. But not to many of these kids these days to worried about that, especially in basketball. Just wanna get to the league asap...ready or not...

That sounds great in theory, but LSU (especially if Martin comes back) is not going to ask him to be a 3 or play like a 3. In college, for THIS team, he's going to be a 4. Plus, he's already shown that he can consistently hit 12-16 foot jumpers. I don't see that as a big area that he needs to improve.

They are good as gone. Both second round. I'd love to see both come back however it's highly unlikely.

Tyrus had back surgery. Get your story straight. He's trying to make a comeback.

Based on that they are two of the top players in the sec. They held their own against the only undefeated team in the country! Other than following basketball for the past 30 something years I've seen this play out many times before. Stromile Swift, Glenn Davis, Hamilton, Etc. Mickey goes on shot blocking and rebounding ability alone and u don't find many 6'10 guys that can run the floor like Martin. The NBA has turned into a one on one game. There will be no zone defenses collapsing on Mickey in the nba. Both second round picks book it. PS. I would love to see both stay another year.
