This is essentially what LSU does now. The only officially retired numbers at LSU are 20 in football, 23, 33, and 50 in basketball, and 15 in baseball. The rest are just retired jerseys, meaning the number is still available to be worn.

Should jerseys be retired based on playing ability alone? Should "character" also be considered?

I just don't think he's in the same boat as the other numbers LSU has retired. He has all the hardware sure, but imho there have been better D lineman to play for the tigers

I think there should be no discussion of any other jersey being retired except for Faulk. Despite the fact he won allot of awards, that doesn't even compare to what he did for our football program in starting the rise to where our program is at today

Too early for retirement but maybe not too early for the Ring of Honor

Yea, but they hardly have any names listed in the main portion of each stadium and arena.

Has LSU released a lit of criteria needed for a number to be retired in football? I seem to remember other schools doing so.

Truth.

Kevin put asses in seats at a very crucial time. Bigtime.

That UH DAY game in the POURING RAIN is a good example. Only reason I didn't leave at halftime was #3, and man, he didn't disappoint.
Kevin took over the game in the 3rd Qtr literally. We were flat and played like isht before he said "nuff o' this shite"

Faulk, faneca, and booger have a better claim in my eyes. But truly, the last 30yrs if anyone put LSU football on the map it was Faulk.

That was my first game in Student Section and one of my favorite. IIRC, he returned a punt on the first place of the 4th quarter and never looked back. Faulk struggled early with some fumbles, but eventually took over.

However I'm fairly certain it was a night game

Ummm....there are only 99 numbers. There are 85 roster spots. Can't retire too many.

IMO, I don't think a number should ever be retired. That's what statues, rings of honor and plaques are for.

Again, LSU doesn't retire numbers, just jerseys. The number can still be worn by current players.

quote:

To have a jersey retired at LSU, an athlete must have completed intercollegiate competition for LSU a minimum of five years prior to nomination. Athletes must have demonstrated truly unusual and outstanding accomplishments, exceeding and in addition to all criteria used for Hall of Fame selection. The athletic performance must be considered unique, such as winning of a Heisman Trophy or National Player of the Year award, and should be based on the total LSU career. Athletes may also be considered for making dramatic impact on the popularity of his or her sport or for significant participation in positive change in LSU Athletics. Nominees must have a unanimous vote of support from the Hall of Fame committee.

Lol- I may have it confused with an OM game btwn 95-96, a day game where it poured so hard I could barely see the action from the stands...and 100% certain I was shitfaced.

Next guy to win the Heisman will likely get his number retired at some point. We haven't had one in close to 60 years...so I don't feel too confident we'll one in the near future. JMO

Then we will just have to agree to disagree (although you are wrong).
