We are leaving tomorrow. My goal is to NOT drive on an Interstate highway for the next 2 weeks! Backroads it is. We're staying at a B&B on a beach on Lake Michigan 30+ miles due east of GBay.

I wanted to do that. We just didn't have enough vacation to do it. Wanted to drive through Dubuque Iowa. I work up there sometimes and I think it's such a cool little city pass through and see.
Yea, I am 34 wife is 31. No kids yet. Figured if we were going to be spontaneous, this is our chance!

I use to do this and you are correct. I found St. Louis a nice diversion. It is a little out of the way, But there are great Italian restaurants ( on the hill ) and some good sites.

Dude good for y'all that will be a freaking awesome arse trip!!

If you got the time there is nothing like driving! See the country because you can't see it by air. No one wants to drive any longer.

Be careful speeding through construction zones in Illinois. The cameras are the same as cops by statute. Fines are huge.

I love to drive. Really do. I like to see parts of the country. Although I have been all over IL and it's all corn fields besides Chicago.
My wife is from Estonia. And she has traveled all over Europe, but not really the U.S. I want her to see the country a little. We have been to NY and Tampa, but we flew. Longest trip was Gatlinburg. So I figure this is a good trip to do that.

You can easily make it way past Memphis if you're coming from Baton Rouge. I live in Lafayette and made it to Marion, Illinois in one day. You can easily get to Green Bay the next day. But Memphis would be nice to enjoy some BBQ and take more time.

I go to Illinois a lot for work, Jackson to Chicago can be done in a long day....although boring, Memphis to Chicago isn't a bad drive...

If your staying in Algoma, get breakfast at Cafe Tlazo. Great food and great coffee! But beware, Temps can be 15 degrees cooler along lake michigan than 10 miles inland depending if the wind is coming off of the lake that day. (coming from a UW grad that grew up right near where you are staying).
