Why do the computers favor the Big 12 over the SEC?

Since the Big 12 is down to 10 teams, they played 9 conference games and only three out-of-conference (OOC) games. I compiled a list of the OOC games played by Big 12 teams. Of the 30 games played, only three were against teams ranked in the BCS Top 25. I realize that many of the computer polls use opponents' records and opponents' opponents' records.
LSU played Oregon. Bama played Penn State. Auburn played Clemson. Georgia played Boise State. Tennessee played Cincinnati. South Carolina faces Clemson and Georgia faces Georgia Tech. The SEC played some tough teams too.
How much did only playing three OOC games help the Big 12 when it comes to strength of schedule? Will this be a consideration of the SEC when they try to figure out the schedules for 14 teams?
It will be interesting to see what type of bump the SEC's SOS gets after this weekend, with a several OOC games being played.
LSU's OOC schedule, which was reviled by many, has turned out to be a great insurance policy in the event we lose a game and have to argue our way into the BCS title game.

What I don't understand is the older generations, say 50+, believe you have to play a hard schedule to get any respect. It really doesn't matter who you play as long you are in a BCS conference and you win. South Florida got all the way up to #2 in the BCS in 2007 and they weren't that good. Boise plays a shite schedule every year and is left out ONLY because they don't play in a conference. If they were the Big East champion they would have had a shot by now. Just win your BCS conference and you're in.

b/c as the SEC has always done sans this year, theyve won a large majority of their OOC games.

I've been asking this for several weeks now.
I don't get the computer bias for the Big 12 AT ALL. I think the problem is that computers give way too much weight to playing decent mid-majors over crappy mid-majors, when in reality there's only a marginal difference between playing one or the other, at best.

I don't understand the computers on this one - it doesn't make any sense - as you have pointed out. Where are the big OOC wins for the Big 12? ULL and Florida St?

I haven't figured that out either. Its ridiculous that Ok State is ahead of Bama in the computers when Ok State loses to Iowa State and Bama's only loss is to the #1 team in the country.

SOS for a lot of the computers is based on your opponents record and your opponents opponets record.
If you hit the scheduling right, and a lot of teams they play (MAC, CUSA, MTW, WAC) end up with decent W/Ls records, it artificially inflates the SOS because it doesn't take into account that you could be playing a bad team with a winning record in a horrible conference.

Because when the top of your conference loses to bottom feeders TTU and ISU they call it depth.

The went 27-3 in those games, and even their bottom teams were picking up solid wins. 8 teams are bowl eligible & they could have 9.

Did you play sports in a league that didn't keep score so that everybody felt good about the game and just played?
I'm not "50+" -- but damn... I'd rather see and PAY for good effing games.... not some BS sad arse track meet game against sorry teams.... and NO not every week in the SEC is as hard as the next.
For YEARS we have laughed at UT and OU... playing essentially a 1 game season in October to see who wins the Big 12 south. I don't want to be that.

On Rivals.com, it says Boise State's SoS is 14, while LSU's is 17... That will confuse me until the day I die...

Did I say I liked this system? Did I say I supported this system? I merely stated a fact that you can play a crappy schedule and still get in. Taking risk OOC is rarely rewarded.

I think people also overlook how having competitive matchups, especially an OOC on the road here and there, actually can help your team down the line, and not just perception-wise.
I honestly don't think this year's LSU team would have developed as well as it has if we had played two throw-away garbage cupcake teams at home instead of Oregon and West Virginia.

Because the Big 12 has one team with a losing record.

It's based on the opponents record and opponents opponent record and only included FBS teams; with your opponents record being weighted more than your oppponents opponent record.
Boise State opponents are 60-46
LSU opponents are 60-48
LSU will move ahead of Boise in SOS after the Arkansas game.

quote:FYI...The SEC is 39-5 in OOC games, with three OOC games this weekend against Clemson, Georgia Tech, Wake Forest and Florida State.
They went 27-3 in those games
Note: some of those OOC games were against FCS teams...assuming each SEC team played one game against an FCS opponent, that is a record of 27-5 against FBS opponents, with a chance to go 31-5.

No you didn't .... sorry.
I guess I misinterpreted your statement as supporting playing weaker teams to rack up "wins".
I don't entirely disssagree that playing a harder schedule is not rewarded as it shuold be with voters, etc. but for fans, it's a lot more fun.
Cup cake wins don't excite me... I can watch 3rd teamers play in the spring game... not really interested in seeing them all that much during the season at the end of blow out wins... no fun in seeing "Joe All-American RS freshman sensation "take a knee" 3 times and toss the ball to the ref.
the 2007 season was the MOST exciting in my LSU history... so many nail biters... THAT was great football.
2011 has been great and the 11 - 0 is fantastic... but all the double digit wins are not nearly as entertaining.
FWIW I actually switched over to Vandy vs. UT Satruday night to watch a close game... then watched most of Baylor vs. OU to finish out my night... LSU vs. Ole Miss was boring by the second quarter.

hope the love fest with the Big 12 continues after OSU beats OU.
