Jamal Adams is going to fly up the boards.

The offense how much time can they give the defense a break

8 dlineman make it to the nfl
Godchaux, LaCouture, Neal, Key, Herron and Gilmore will all "make it to the NFL". I wouldn't doubt it if Gilmore was one and done. Our freshmen will probably put two to four guys in the NFL, and that doesn't include Isaiah Washington and maybe Travonte Valentine.
Minter = Beckwith
Mathieu was transcendental, but Claiborne was no better than Tre White. They are both excellent corners, but neither should be taken in the first 15 picks.
So 2011 had 8? Well 2016 has White, Jamal, Tolliver, Paris, Savion, Jefferson, Donte, Fulton, Battle, Monroe, Thomas and Cam Lewis. I'd bet 8 of those make it to the NFL.
Generally I agree with your post about the potential of 2011 vs the talent of 2016, but what was Minter's proven talent before 2011 played out? He wasn't even a starter half way through that year. And Minter is not the only one who saw his stock shoot up that year.

I think he's our best interior lineman since Glenn Dorsey.
Youre joking right?
Not really. He's started in 21 out of 25 games since he's stepped foot on campus and has played in every single one.
When was the last time we've had a true sophomore DT with 6 sacks? Only 2 defensive tackles in the past 10 seasons have had 6+, Glenn Dorsey and Drake Nevis. Both were seniors those years. 11 years ago Claude Wroten had 6, also as a senior. I'd say that's pretty impressive company.
How about this, I'll rephrase my comment. Godchaux has the potential to be our best interior linemen since Glenn Dorsey.

Arden Key. He's gonna be a monster in Aranda's system.

Claiborne was the far better cfb cb.
People let Claiborne's nfl tenure cloud how they remember his lsu days.
Mo was an all american and was a thorpe award winner at lsu. White hasnt come close to either of those. In no way is White the same as Claiborne.
Injuries and scheme have made his nfl stint horrible. You ask a great man to man cb to play in a tampa 2 and he struggles.

In no way is Tre White as good as Mo.
But as you said we usually see eye to eye on subjects. I think 2016 is the 4th most talented lsu roster since 2000.
2011
2006
2003
2016
I just find it hard to believe that our 2016 roster will have 8 dlinemen, 2 lbs, and 8 dbs make nfl rosters.

Key.
The rest of the D line has some good, but not great players. Key is this one special member of that group.
White and Beckwith will be solid again. They'll get knocked perception-wise because they are already good players. People will just say, well they're doing what they are supposed to do.
I like Adams, but it seems like for every one great play, he makes a bad one. The guy is super-aggressive and uses that to really make some excellent plays. However, he also sometimes gets himself out of position by trying to make the big play rather than the solid play.

Adams will need to come up big in run support. The LB'ers weakness will be a talking point after the Auburn game.

I don't think the 2016 defense will be the equal of 2011 but it isn't hard to imagine that there will be 8 DBs, 2 LBs, and 8 DL make NFL rosters. Perhaps not stars but making an active roster.
Pick 8 DBs from: Toliver, Paris, Smith, White, Williams, Monroe, Lewis, Fulton, Thomas, Jackson, Jefferson, Adams, and Battle.
Pick 8 DLs from: Washington, Clark, Bower, Roddy, Neal, Logan, Martin, Gilmore, Herron, Alexander, Lawrence, LaCouture, Godchaux, and Valentine,
Pick 2 LBs from: Beckwith, White, Divinity, Riley, Alexander, Thornton, Voorhies, Key, Anthony.
The two easiest groups to pick from are DBs and LBs.

Neal or Key
Yup! I think a lot of people are sleeping on Neal. He could be posed to have a huge year.
Key and Neal rushing from the outside has the potential to be a nightmare for offensive lines.

I would venture a guess that it would be Key. Adams and Beckwith should be phenomenol; but with the freedom of movement that Key will have in the Aranda scheme could prove 'key', pardon the pun.

Wait. You think it's the norm for lsu to have 18 players on a defense to make a nfl roster? Come on.
quote:
Pick 8 DBs from: Toliver, Paris, Smith, White, Williams, Monroe, Lewis, Fulton, Thomas, Jackson, Jefferson, Adams, and Batt
The only sure fire nfl players on that list are white and adams. Probabaly toliver and smith. The others have done nothing to warrant being called a nfl player.

You cant. The only sure fire nfl players are neal, key ,bower and Godchaux. The others have done nothing to warrant being called a nfl player.

The only player of this group to do anything of merit is Beckwith.
Im starting to realize why all the negatigers( not saying you are one) think we massively underachieve. Lsu fans think we routinely have talent that matches up with 2011 lsu defense.
Do you know how rare it is to have 18 nfl players on 1 college defense?
There are 54 lsu players in the nfl and 18 were on 1 roster. So yes its extremely hard to believe there are 18 future nfl players on the 2016 roster.
People keep mistaking potential and star rankings as talent. Just because a player come in with a 5 star rating doesnt automatically mean he is more talented than a 3 star recruit that goes on to be a an all american.
I readily admit its kind of unfair to compare the 2 teams because we all lnow how talented 2011 was ( once in a lifetime talent) and 2016 hasnt finished their story.
I just dont see a very talented secondary. I see a secondary with great potential because of star power.
We are returning starters from a secondary that finished 87th in opponents pass completions per game and 57th in opponents passing yards per game. So pardon me for thinking our 2016 secondary is no where near as talented as the defense (2011) that finished 1st or 2nd in every meaningfull defensive statistic.
Its not a knock on 2016. Every lsu defense ever falls short conpared to 2011.
Even 2003 barely edges out 2011 while playing a far far easier schedule.

2011 was certainly a great defense, but the 2003 defence; albeit with a more consistent offence, was a sideline to sideline fence that got better each game. Case in point; a close win at home against uga early in the year, versus a blowout win against the same team in the sec championship game. That result could be attributed to offensive improvement, but defensive dominance provided the Tigers with ample opportunities to score while saying no no no to the ga offence. JMHO
