So let me get this straight...

USC has not been relevant for over a decade. They get Lincoln Riley from Oklahoma and suddenly they are a top 15 football team?

Their last 4 recruiting classes were, 2019-20th, 2020-63rd, 2021-7th, and 2022-70th. By comparison LSU's last 4 were, 2019-5th, 2020-4th, 2021-3rd, and 2022-12th.

USC went 4-8 last year and got blown out in all of their losses except BYU where lost 35-31. They lost to the likes of Cal, BYU, Oregon State, and Stanford. They gave up 62 points to UCLA, and lost by 30

LSU's played 7 top 25 opponents in their last 8 games last year and was respectable in all of those games.

I sincerely think that if these two team played right now, LSU would completely dominate USC. If USC played LSU's 2021 schedule, they would have went 2-8.

What am I missing?

Star power transfers at skill positions, a dynamic new coach and a much weaker schedule then SEC teams have

Media darlings. USC is in the largest media market in all of college football.

USC in in LA and the conference would have only 2 teams ranked if SC weren’t. This is a good example of how worthless preseason rankings really are.

The schedule is the big one. People don’t realize that on rankings

Same with OU. They lost a ton and still have the 5th best odds to win the title because they play in the B12 and are favored in every game.

I don’t hate USC like most people. CFB is better when they are good. It’s nice to have a villain on the West Coast to give me a reason to watch a big Pac 12 game

The rankings aren’t based on which teams are the best in terms of talent. Said otherwise, it isn’t an indicator of who should win head to head.

Most of the time, preseason rankings are a prediction of how many games the team will win against their schedule. Easier schedules mean more wins, which makes a higher ranking.

USC has a coach who has proven he can get to the playoffs and a dynamic QB. Do I think they turn it around this year? Maybe, maybe not.

I wouldn’t worry too much about preseason rankings though.

1) They got the 2021 Biletnikoff winner
2) They got the 2021 #2 QB in HS rankings
3) They got the 2022 #1 in transfer team rankings

QB. You need an elite QB to win the big games in college football.

Their QB showed the world how good he was last year. Ours struggles in PAC 12 play. That’s a key difference.

Preseason rankings = popularity contest

LSU will never win those head to head with Bama, Ohio State, USC, Michigan, Notre Dame, etc.

Plus media voters are lazy and go with name recognition, like most voters.

When looking at 2022 and on I would think looking at the overall recruiting composite is better than looking at the HS recruiting numbers.

Do that and USC is 6th for 2022 and LSU is 7th.

Meaning USC got a bunch of players in via transfer portal that bumped them up that high, which is probably looked at as experienced players who make a more immediate impact.

Still, it is all BS IMO, it's a preseason poll and it is all based on guesswork as to how the teams will come together.

That LSU would NOT dominate USC if they played right now.

Saw a stat that 19 of USC's 2-deep are transfers this year. That's insane. If anyone needed more proof that the transfer portal completely changes recruiting.

Caleb Williams is very talented. But let's not pretend that Kansas's steel curtain defense shut him down until he busted a big run on a 4th and 1 play.

Add in the talent around him compared to Daniels at az st, and how that talent compares to the avg opponent... not a very fair comparison.

Easier path to be relevant this year

Extremely talented QB

The media loves Lincoln Riley because he’s all offense.

The media is also desperate for USC to be relevant.

Go back and check out the preseason rankings when LSU was good. We sure were winning those.

Preseason rankings simply do not matter. Play your schedule and don't embarras yourself. And it all works out.

They have a decent QB, but I agree it smells like a plan to have certain schools on top.

West coast media (and ESPN) want USC to be relevant so bad.
