Was the issue on kickoff return TD a badly directed kick?

Seems like from the outset, the coverage was shifting for a kick to the left and yet the kick went slightly to the right of middle.

Thus, the coverage team was way out of position. It seemed to be on the kicker there, but still tons of issues on special teams that clearly are linked to coaching/personnel issues.

The coverage team is always out of position.

That was my first thought. Looked like the kick should have gone deep left.

Even if you're doing that you shouldn't leave one side of the field basically open.

Theres no way 8 of our guys being on half the field was an error. There definitely was something going on or some kind of missed call.

But, why get cute? Kick the fricking ball and go tackle.

My biggest shock is that we dont play with any "safeties". The fastest guy on the team to run his arse down if he breaks it. WHere in the hell was our kicker?

To put is this way - we've already had 2 kickoffs out of bounds (relatively rare) this season AND a delay of game on a kickoff (literally - in almost 50 years of watching football - I can't recall that in a pee-wee, junior high, high school, college or pro game - a delay of game on a kickoff before). Our kickoff and kick coverage game needs to be rebuilt from the ground up.

Like ASAFP.

I agree that there significant coaching deficiencies at that position. Clearly l, the safety role that Russell Shepard used to play doesn't exist with BDP.

There are too many great athletes on this team for the special teams to struggle this badly.

Go back and watch the play again. The first problem was that it was supposed to be a kick left, but the kick went too far right. (Probably trying too hard to keep it inbounds ) Then, the only man we actually had in the lane that the return man took was clearly blocked in the back. It looked like a second LSU player was held from behind as well (jersey grab).

Bottom line, we still screwed up. Hopefully we will have some sort of fix for this next week. Don't understand how Domingue can kick 40-50 yard FGs no prob, but then can't get it into the endzone on kickoffs using a tee. Seems like his kicks are going way too high. Maybe we can try using a holder and scrap the tee for kickoffs?

It seems the coverage is always shifting to the left. Look at the Eastern Michigan game. All of their returns were good b/c our coverage shifted too far.

It makes me wonder what the heck they're instructed to do.

More starters on the kick teams plus Gamble kicking would fix this with the quickness.

No way with our kickers should we be doing directional kicks. They should just aim for the middle of the field. That in and of itself is a difficult enough task for these guys to accomplish.

They need a new ST coach for starters, but the head hunter is not doing his job right. His job is to split the coverage guys and he isn't doing it

Well when almost all of the kicks have been going that way, of course the coverage is going to shade that direction. The problem on this play is that there were too many (8) players on that side. Also, I have yet to see anyone truly flying down there to get the returner to start making cuts and lateral movements (slowing his vertical movement up the field) like we used to see. It seems the returners are all up to full speed and hitting a hole before the first LSU coverage guy is even ready to attempt to lay a hand on him.

There was actually a photo in today Advocate clearly showing the 7 players on the left side of the 50 yrd line, the kicker half arse in the middle, leaving only 3 to cover the entire right side. But my bigger bitch is if LSU had a kicker who could reach even half way into the endzone, this & the other kick returns never would have happened. The Cock's kicker was knocking the ball almost to the back of the endzone for the majority of his kicks, both with & against the wind. And both LSU's kickers are on full schollys.

The issue is a badly directed hire.

It was several things:

1) The kick was set dead middle, it was supposed to be directional

2) Guice out paced the guy next to him by about 10 yards. (not his fault, the guy next to him was either slow, lazy, or both).

3) After out running the guy next to him, he left his lane. Creating a hole.

4) Jackson, our safety speed guy, was supposed to hang back in case somebody broke free so he could run them down, he didn't. He engaged blockers.

Combine all those things together and you get an opposing TD!

Gamble had one of these last year as well.
