Tyrann Mathieu - the numbers don't lie...

He's listed at 5'9", 180 pounds. I have not seen him up close, but I estimate he is no taller than 5'8", and perhaps 170 to 175 pounds.
In his true freshman season, he had 50 total tackles, 28 unassisted, 7 1/2 tackles for loss, 3 1/2 sacks, 1 interception and forced 3 fumbles.
That has to be some kind of record for productivity points for a true freshman defensive player who did not start (at least not the whole year).
By way of comparsion, as a true freshman PP7 had 41 total tackles, 32 unassisted, 1 1/2 tackle for loss, 0 sacks, 1 interception and forced a single fumble.
I was a fan all year, but some of that was the subjective rooting for the little guy and the fact he made tackles all over the field, from wherever he lined up. Upon objective review, the numbers do not lie.
ETA: It appears the lsusports.net stats have not been updated with the Cotton Bowl stats. Including the Cotton Bowl, Mathieu finished the year with 2 interceptions, 5 forced fumbles and 3 fumble recoveries. I'm not sure if the numbers I listed above for tackles included his CB performance either, which would have added 6 UA tackles, 1 assisted (7 total), and an additional TFL. But, now I even question Peterson's freshman stats.
Maybe the numbers lie somewhat?

I think you mistyped this one.

Guessing that's a typo or you meant 32 unassisted.
ETA: Damn I must be slow.
ETA again: But not as slow as Northshore.

I'm going by lsusports.net, which may not be 100 percent accurate. I recall the interception against WVU. In which game did he record the second?

Pretty much the best one of the year, outside of Peterson, against Texas A&M

A&M i think.. and it was probably the best INT in college football last year

He's a smaller Jerico Nelson...that said, I like him as a player, just not as a CB

I'm a huge T-Mat fan and I'm hoping he has a great year.
Remember though, you can't compare those numbers to PP7 or any other starting CB b/c the position he played was like a hybrid type. He has not had to be a true corner yet. I'm hoping he becomes a lock down CB, but we do have to see him as a true CB first.

He caused three or four other interceptions. No stat for that.
He is they best true freshmen defensive back I can ever recall seeing. Looking forward to seeing him a few more years.

this is what i was going to say. they should keep track of this.
my fear though is that people will have just absurb expectations for him next year. love to watch the kid play but i just hope they keep him doing what he's been doing out of the nickle packages. he got burned more than once last year playing man on the outside.

ignorance at it's finest. He got beat on a double move on 4th and short with no safety help as a true freshmen. He must be a terrible corner. Ignore the fact he caused more TO's than anyone else in the country as a part time player

Mathieu has not yet proven himself to have the versatility that pp7 had. He is an amazing player at #3 CB on the field... and he has made some amazing plays from the corner too, but if we are talking about two CBs on the field in a base 4-3, I think you have to go with Simon and Claiborne. They both have a little more size to them and, from what I saw, are both better at man-to-man coverage. The single most impressive (unexpected) corner back play I saw this season was not Mathieu, but when Simon made Julio Jones look silly on a couple of man-to-man slant routes.
I guess I'm just saying that TM is great, but I don't think he should be a permanent starter with 4 DBs on the field (anything less than nickel) over Claiborne and Simon.
