"Boy, Walter, these Kentucky Wildcats are playing with vim, vigor, and vitality!"

Some of my fondest memories of Tiger football were spent listening to the games in our living room on my Dad's antique radio. In the 60's and 70's it was a HUGE deal for games to be televised and was nothing like today where darn near every game was on TV. It made actually going to the games a special event.

Sorry, busy at work & just got on, but yes, John Ferguson & Walter Hill were great. JF had a great voice, and thanks for also mentioning "Big Sid," as my friend & I used to call him, meaning Sid Crocker, of course. The PA announcer, he also had a distinct delivery & we used to imitate his delivery, "Davis carries, stopped by Smith." What great memories!

I use to listen to JF as a boy. He made those Sat nights so nice, it felt like you were actually there.

Sometimes he would mess up a little some of the expressions were priceless

I remember when he thought a ball was gonna be intercepted but it was dropped..I can remember his voice raise and saying "It's Inter-complete" "He dropped the ball" Or "Davis takes the handoff from miley cuts back and he's spilled at the 35 yard line"

John Ferguson was money

I listened to many games on a small radio that would fit in my shirt pocket as as stood watch, when I was in the US Navy. I listened to WWL in ports all along the East Coast. The mention of Walter Hill jogged my memory, "Listen to the post game show brought to you by the Ground Patty".

"HUNGRY?? GRROUNNND PATTYYY!"

Wow- that's a name I haven't heard in years!

His call of the Bert Jones to Brad Davis pass to beat Ole Miss on the game's last play is priceless. I hope someone has a link to that call.

the first link doesn't include jackson's pat, but listen close and you can hear the horn go off as time expires.

the second link is about 11 min. in length and includes the last drive or two (i forget). anyway, you get ferguson's "...it's pandemonium in Tiger Stadium" after jackson's boot.

I thought I read somewhere he was a B-25 pilot. Either way:

ETA:
quote:

Ferguson was a pilot in the Army Air Forces in the latter stages of World War II. He completed 144 missions piloting cargo planes over the Himalayas between India and China. His job was to supply B-29s for their bombing runs.

This was incredibly hazardous duty.

John Ferguson, voice of the tigers.. How many of you remember when he & Max Fettie (not sure of spelling) co hosted a radio show for WJBO at Daltons Dept. Store on saturdays. I rcvd a silver dollar and a small Sunbeam bread on different occasions. He did a lot for LSU.

You really did "have to be there".

i was there in the mid 60's listening. I loved john fergurson. I remember he used to say things such as "he's submarined down. It also seemed like they had the band section miced as well. Those were great days, but those days would not be acceptable in todays demand for wins. Seems like a lot of things have changed though.

Man, what a great stroll down memory lane. I was born in 1947 in SW La so I grew up listening to John & Walter. I entered the Air Force in 1966 and didn't resume listening to them on the radio until I returned from overseas assignments in 1972. I could pick up a 50,000 watt station out of Shreveport. The night Bert threw the TD pass to Brad Davis I think I set a personal best for vertical leap

Ah, those were the days.

Here's jolt for those of you who know nothing other than HD or streaming video...

Heard this call on a $3 transistor walking arounf apt in High Point NC....had to keep moving to keep WWL signal...with the "4 secs and broken up" call I smashed the thing to the floor..

wife heard the "1 sec left"...from the speaker/battery combo now devoid of plastic casing....still a chill!!!!

I always loved watching the "Ole Beachcomber" on TV. His ending catch phrase was, "Remember to set the hook hard!"
