....as the "Voice Of The Tigers"? We had a camp at Old River for years, and back in the day MAYBE 1 or 2 games would be televised. Sure, we stayed in town and went to a few games- but I must say.....

......Some of my very best memories of Tiger Football was listening to the games that would kickoff at 7:30 PM, broadcast by the LSU Sports Network (and usually on an A.M. station)with Mr. John Ferguson doing play-by-play, and Walter Hill providing color commentating.
If you can remember those days, you know what I'm talking about.

Sure- I enjoy going to and watching them live- but I tell you, we didn't miss a damn thing listening to those broadcasts back then....JF made you feel like you were there.
And no- this isn't a knock against our current crew- who I also enjoy. They do a great job. But things were different back then....

You really did "have to be there".

Outstanding memories of Mr. Ferguson and his classic professionalism. He was also the voice of weekly SEC basketball with a sidekick named Joe Dean for many years.
Remember, "That was another Alexander drive!" called many a time during the '77, '78 seasons.

My Dad told me there was a guy before John Ferguson who was even better than him. Can't remember the name, though.

I remember Ferguson, and thought he was really good. Was his sidekick a guy named Walter Hill?

I've always liked Jim Hawthorne, too. But, the OP is right. Back in the day the radio was usually our only option. Up until the 80's, really.

My first experience of LSU was lying down in front of an old Motorola radio with my uncle and listening to John Ferguson broadcasting the game. I'm hoping anyway that it was JF and my memory isn't playing tricks on me. I'm talking about back in '58 on up. I know he was calling the games on radio thru most of the 60s anyway. Anyone help me here? when did JF start calling the games?

J.C. Politz comes to mind. I'd say they were about even. Both great.

One of my favorite memories is listening to his broadcast of the classic 17-12 loss to USC in 1979 with my brother as we paced around and around the house all night.

I remember listening to games before that one, but that is the first one I have really vivid memories of, when I was 9 going on 10. I don't think I paid attention as much before that game. But I always paid attention after that.

I also remember my dad bringing home these now crude-looking cards with the spreads of selected NFL and college games for the week. I'm not sure who he placed the bets with, but he always let me help him make the picks.

He had a better radio voice than JH, but I still like them both.

"Here's the extra point and it is.....GOOD! Time out on the field with the Score LSU 30, Ole Miss 8. This is the LSU...Football Network."

That guy was just pure gold.

John Ferguson broadcast the LSU games from 1946 to 1987. He was voted the 9th best college football announcer of all time by Bleacher Report!

Oh, hell yeah I remember Ole Bob! In his Chevy Stationwagon & his green Coleman canoe he used to fish out of! His camp was about 200 yards down from us on the "woods side" of the road.

He'd always get flagged down by "Goody"- the old guy in the wheelchair that hung out by the levee on the highway- for either a cold beer or a couple of "beer dollars". LOL
Come to think of it- Goody flagged everybody down, as I remember!!

Thanks for the replies, folks. Great to hear that I am not alone in respecting Mr. Ferguson's work. Those are memories we'll keep forever.

Yep, when I was young. Had a small a.m. radio and used to listen to the games, one of my first memories of college football.

I never looked at it that way- but you're probably right! They just don't know how much they missed, do they? It's hard to explain it unless you were there.....
