I agree that Jim will be missed; he definitely is the voice of the Tigers. I do remember John Ferguson, but Hawthorne was much better. My only complaint, why is Alex "Illix," and Alex Box "Illic Box"??

I Remember, his disgusted tone when he said.

"And he is going to sacked again by Willis, it's going to be good when he is playing on Sunday , we haven't blocked him in four years,"

Lb patrick Willis. 200?, don't know why I remember that call.

That was a heartfelt sign off that you have to respect and he even singled out the fan base!

He will likely go down as the last recognized "voice of the LSU Tigers". In this day and age where just about every LSU football, baseball and basketball game is televised, the need to listen to the radio play-by-play is becoming obsolete. For almost the entirety of his career he many times was the only "glimpse" into the game for LSU fans. For many games (especially baseball and basketball), his call is the only picture LSU fans have of the game

Apparently a while back when LSU honored the Box family at a game, the family discussed with Jim and others that Box pronounced his name "Alec". Jim now seems to call each Alex "Alec".

I never paid attention that he got his start as the voice of the Leesville HS Wampus Cats. Which makes sense why he calls it Elic Box instead of Alex Box. Almost everyone I know from Cenla calls Alexandria "Elic". I asked a friend of mine why. She said it's because it's just a shortened way of their pronunciation of Alexandria. They say Elic-andria.

I don't know that I hear that much if at all. I know I don't say it.

I have lived in Birmingham over twenty years and Jim has been my conduit to LSU. Thanks for all the great championship calls as well as the lean years in LSU sports. Jim will be missed. I love his passion for LSU. Best of luck enjoying retirement Jim.

This.
Growing up in the 90's out of state, WWL was it for everything that wasn't on t.v. I hate to see Jim go. He truly is the Voice of LSU sports. It just won't be the same.

When I was a kid, he was the color guy and eventual play by play guy for Northwestern State (Harvard on Cane River). Always liked him and enjoyed him with LSU. While Ferguson was the boss, Jim was a worthy guy to follow in his footsteps.

Jim will be missed ! I met the Hawthorne family back in 1984. The family are wonderful people. Jim has been an idol of mine since I was a teenager. His voice will be missed. I pray that Jim will be around for a long time. May his daughters be blessed ! Thank you Jim for all if your dedication and professionalism. I will always be thankful for the memories. - Eric M.

I'm sure he grew up saying Ellec, just like his kin.
Do Emerald Coast residents also call "Nawlins" Neeew Orleeeeens?

John had a bit sweeter voice, but Jim seemed more emotionally invested in the games(even to the point of whining).
I think his excitability created some of his miscalls, which I can forgive after listening to the monotonous drone of many other school's sportscasters.

He's probably the most recognized voice in LA.
