For all of the crap he got towards the end (I was one of them from time to time), there's going to be something wrong with listening to LSU sports and not hear his voice. When I first moved to Florida in '93, we were out in the boonies and didn't have cable. Jim walked me through every game. I remember being at the mall with my family and staying back in the car to listen to the Troy Twillie interception to secure the Auburn win. I remember his call of the ill-advised Eddie Kennison punt return that turned into a TD against Mississippi State. His call of the Todd Walker grand slam against A&M in the CWS had me jumping all over the house.
Thank you, Jim

Thanks Jim!
Listening to LSU baseball games on WWL on the truck radio while raking pine straw in the north woods of Florida before ESPN and cable.
Sometimes having to go outside and sit in the truck to listen to a football game for better reception.

I heard last nite that he was the "Voice of the Leesville Wampus Cats" when he was hired by LSU.
I am from LHS and never knew that. I reached at LHS for over 11 years (retired two years ago) and it was never mentioned.
I have always loved hearing Hawthorne on the radio when I had a chance.

Misspeaks happen to everybody and at Jim's age it only adds to the color of his persona !

I'm only 42, but he's the only announcer I've listened to for LSU.
Him, my Dad, and LSU baseball. Best years of my life.

Through hundreds of players, 4 coaches, 22 SEC titles, and 6 national titles, LSU baseball always sounded the same thanks to one man. Thank you, Jim!

Jim wasn't perfect at the end but was certainly a true LSU Tiger and the only voice of the Tigers that I grew up with hearing on the radio. Thanks for the some of the most legendary epic calls in LSU Sports history Jim.
Those that have bashed Jim will miss him once the new play by play guy has taken his place.

I don't think that is entirely correct. Although he did the broadcasts for Leesville High earlier in his career, he had other stops prior to his gig at LSU. This is from his bio on LSU Sports.net

"Hawthorne has done play-by-play from high school to professional levels, including Northwestern State, Centenary College, Texas League Baseball and World Football League. Hawthorne is married to the former Juanita Carol Thomason, also of Anacoco, and has a son, Joseph William, two daughters, Jaime Lynn and Amanda Ruth, two granddaughters, two grandsons and one great granddaughter".
Either way, he will be missed..

Boy he got a hold of that one, way back, caught by the second sacker in shallow right, good times.

I grew up listening to John Ferguson with Walter Hill and spent much of the last 30+ years with JH. That's a pretty damned good run for more than 45 years.

At 42, he's all I've ever known. He is synonymous with my youth and beyond. Spending most of my childhood in N Ga and not having cable, jim was the link to my birthplace (La) and my beloved Tigers. The times I've spent sitting by a boom box or in my car while hanging on his every word is something younger people will never understand. Age is the "universal equalizer". The greats have all suffered from age. Jackson, Mussberger, etc. they still garner respect. So does jim. While not perfect and having more missteps in his elder years, he has been great. Some will never understand the struggle of antenna aluminum foil or driving around on a Saturday night to find the best car audio reception. When that crowd noise crackled over those 50,000 watts and jim's voice broke in, IT WAS SATURDAY NIGHT. Thanks for the memories jim and as always, GEAUX TIGERS!
