Obviously, LSU needs co-special teams coaches to fix this.

Should a Critical Talent Evaluator be able to assess the talent of his punter and kicker, if he is the primary position coach?
Admittedly, I've never encountered a CTE before and do not understand the specialty.

Ensminger is an asset in recruiting, at least. He has strong relationships with HS coaches all over the state.

Peveto has fielded a disappointing unit here, thus far, that's for sure. He has had excellent ST units here. But, not this year...

That 22 yard field goal was ugly. I don't know how it wasn't blocked. Domingues 30 yarders have looked solid, but his trajectory is so inconsistent. I still haven't heard a straight answer as to what's up with Dellahousaye.

I used to feel the odds of creating a turnover on a kickoff were much greater than the opponent breaking one. Not anymore.

Dale Peveto. I called this shite when he got hired. He's ruined our special teams. Our special teams went downhill last year when he took over.

If we lose a close game this year then it will likely be because of special teams. Sure, you can always find some other play to blame it on; the fumble or the holding the call that got the TD called back, etc. However, hopefully those things are not issues that have plagued your team all year long. I look to issues that have been there every game and our special teams is the biggest stand out. I would also say costly penalties but the jury is out on whether that is a team issue or ref crew issue, we certainly didn't have those kinds of penalties in our one game without Ritter. Anyway, the shanked punts and horrible return coverage is killing us. We can not allow good or great teams to consistently start at the 30-40 yard line and expect to win a game. We have to bury them deep and let our defense wear them down.

Both are critical talent evaluators and greatly help with the overall game plan each week. You don't know shite about the impact they make in this program.

Then find an administrative role for Peveto, or make him the co LB coach. He does help with LBs, but his special teams, every phase of it, punting, kicking, returning, defending, is horrible.

Got to find somebody with the stuff for special teams. That and the penalties, are killing us in games.

watch lsu defend the other teams gunners on a punt... they run right past them. no blocking to bumping or anything.

Let's fix what we can fix.. Surely if we have a kicker who can put the kickoffs in out the end zone that would be a start.. but maybe we don't. Thought Gamble had a booming leg? But obviously the coaches know better and absolutely have their reasons.. I hope they can get better on coverage.

Coaches teach sky kicks . Gamble and other kickers CAN. And should lockout if end zone . Sky kick almost cost arky game couple years ago. starting at 25 really is not a bad thing to do . Also let's these kids showcase legs for nfl teams. Number of touchbacks = x

I know people like to bitch about peveto, but we actually improved on special teams in almost every category last season. This year we are struggling. But again the linebackers don't seem so bad and weren't bad in his previous stint here. Chavis was supposed to be the lb guru, I don't see a drop off. as a group sans a couple of boys from ga was usually the weaker unit on the field under chavis.

one thing I don't like is we seem to hold off going after punter, maybe they think its better to gain some yards then have an opportunity for the other team to score. But when you watch Syracuse put pressure on the punter he shanked it. I just wish we would go after the kicker a lil more.

no, no they didn't. While white my not have good awerness at times, he still averages more yards per return than obj did. we were in the top 3 of the sec in every st category except kick return coverage.

We were at the Syracuse game and watching the punters at halftime practicing and warming up. Neither punter could punt the ball more than 50 yards in the air. Other teams would simply say never let the ball hit the ground and the best LSU is getting is 40 actual yards on a punt. That needs to change.

It's only a matter of time. I think this may cost us a close game this year
With our offensive philosophy the punt game is critical to ice games. Specifically in that situation (this year and last) it has failed miserably. In a system & conference where on loss is the difference between playoffs or not, can not afford this.

Coverage is pitiful. I see opposing teams with blockers looking for someone to put a hat on 3sec after catching the ball, and not finding anyone. Blockers 5-7 yards ahead of returner at the 15 yards up from where caught.

Not sure why this is happening. But damn, we got speed. Use it. If they are picking lines to draw quit it! It's safer but it's obviously no working. Let the speed guys loose and disrupt some shite. If one blocker whiffs and another chases the speed guy, guess what there are now 2 unblocked guys that held the line to make the tackle.

"unfairly" focusing on punting.....
Yr / Rtn Yds per Gm / TD given up
-----------------------------
2011 / 3.65 / 0
2012 / 3.47 / 0
2013 / 3.13 / 0
2014 / 9.14 / 1
2015 / 23.0 / 0 (through 3 games)

Might not have had a drop off exactly coinciding with BDP coming on board, but there is a drop off in performance.

Coverage is a problem. The punter is a problem. You don't get much return yardage or risk a TD if the guy fair catches. It's about placement not yardage. Note that the offensive production is a factor in that placement.

Oh, Syracuse had 7 all kick returns for 176 yds, which is more than they had rushing (127) or passing (154).

Keehn being second team all-SEC last year was a joke. As noted above, his average might have been good, but that was because he would boom every other one, yet horrible shanks at Inopportune times. This year it's been all shanks or punts that are head high. It's unfair to expect coverage teams to stop long returns when they don't get half way there before the ball touches down. Ditto for the KO returns-there are HS kickers all over this state hitting the back of the end zone almost every time, why is that a lost world for a major powerhouse?

It doesn't appear to me that TD can reach the end zone consistently, we gave a full ride to a PK that uses the middle of the field less than a Les Miles passing game, and our former full-time kicker either can't or doesn't want to kick anymore.

IDGAF what someone might tout about BDP contributing as a talent evaluator or a sauce slopper, he's now been a horrible coach with two different units during his two stints on Les' pit crew. It's as frustrating watching his ST as it used to be watching his defenses.

That's what happens when you go from a NFL-rated special teams coach to the pic posted above.

Not saying a college team HAS to have a nfl level coach to be successful, but there is a reason he's back here.

Good recruiter, just not a good coach.
